Will my Bronco 2.3L require premium fuel? Not something I normally care about as my last few vehicles required premium or mid (Ram Hemi) but with the current gas prices it would certainly be nice to drop to regular. Thx!

It does not require it but if you want the extra power you'll need to pony up the few extra $$ per fillup. If your going to be commuting in your Bronco you may not see the need for the extra power. If you'll be towing or climbing in the mountains you might otherwise see where you could use the extra hp's that premium fuel gives you.

^ what he said. These engines automatically adjust the timing based on what the knock sensors detect - so for higher octane fuels, they can advance the timing further (automatically), resulting in more power/tq.

Already got you answer, so won't repeat that.

One thing to add: if you switch between regular and premium (or vice versa), take it easy for a few miles before you go hard on your Bronco. I don't know why, but it seems to takes awhile for those knock sensors and the computer system to figure out what's going on—especially at higher altitudes. I've heard a few people like to blend off their their transitions between premium and regular by running a tank on mid grade. I don't think that's necessary, but if you are paranoid about it may be a good idea??

I have a chevy Equinox 2.0T and the owners manual recommends to use Premium but you can use 87 but if it starts to knock you need to stop driving it. S I have been using Premium this past year since I bought it and have been averaging 25 MPGs, I decided $3.87 (for regular) was high enough for me to try it. I am happy to report that I am getting 28.8 MPGs this tank. I do feel a slight reduction in power but nothing major. and has been Knock free for 1/2 tank so far.

that's only $5.39/gallon for 93??? holy crap.. I wish!!

here's my local Chevron station as of yesterday (I'm sure it's higher today)... and we don't even get the option for 93... 91 is the highest we get:

I used regular for first 9k miles and I averaged 16.7 mpg at highway speeds, and 20.1 in mountains at less than 55. I switched to 93 octane 3 tanks ago and average mpg went to 17.8 mpg at highway speeds. Not in western mountains now so no comparison. Rather interesting, but doesn't seem to justify the extra cost of the premium fuel. This is with BL non Sasquatch 2.3l. MPG figures drop quickly when driving above 55 MPH. 2 hours of serious off-road crawling averaged 15.4 mpg.

I am 7k miles in. I only run 87 in it.
I am consistently getting 23-24 mpg.
The manual says 87. If towing or off roading you can use premium, but you don't have to.

I have the 2.3 4 cylinder. Same engine as in the Explorer.
I am conscious of how I drive. Rarely do I get up over 1600 rpm. If you are slow of the start from a stop, and limit speeds over 60 mph, you would be amazed at the difference in overall performance.

I don't know, I always drive in eco mode and not jackrabbit starts. In highway I stick to slow lane and 65. Can't reconcile my figures after 6 months vs what others have posted. Guess I'm just the oddball. Just need more positive waves man
