No more Spare Tire

So I have heard a lot of debate on Jeep forums about carrying a full size spares. I am in a position where I need to decide if I want to delete it or re-enforce it and extend for my new tires.

I have to buy a kit either way, just looking for advice/experiences. I have heard people say they never need it off road, just a patch kit and compressor. I have heard the weight of larger tires can cause undo wear and tear.

Just looking for any sort of though or advice maybe more experienced off roaders have had.

Is your question whether you should carry a spare tire?

Will you be off road, on road, urban or rural, cell coverage, do you have AAA or a similar service? That's a pretty broad question; thoughts? Any detail, or just generally, thoughts?

A bit of everything really. Just wondering why someone would remove the spare.

Oh, well, if it 'twere me, I'd just carry the spare when you think you might need it. I'd leave it at home the other times. No reason to put the weight on there when you don't need it, but you definitely don't want to be caught without it when you do.

You really don't need any of the recovery gear we carry, unless you do. So, do you want to be without it when you need it?

Yes, there are tire plug kits. Yes, they can work if you have a flat, but, if you have a sidewall tear, or a larger tear, do you want to use a plug kit? Is it better than having a full-size spare tire? What truly is the downside of carrying a spare tire? So, I would weigh the pros and cons of having/not having a spare. Or, maybe a mini-threat assessment. What's the probability (do you actually wheel where you have an increase probability of sidewall tear)? What's the impact (do you wheel in areas where you can't call AAA for a tow)?

I have 37s. My full size spare is mounted on the upgraded 4WP tire carrier. Works good. Vision out the back is fine but some bumps around town does cause added stress back there but thankfully no issues.

I'm considering removing the spare unless offroading or long road trip to not only prolong the hinge life on my tailgate but also reduce overall weight of the vehicle by roughly 100lbs. *And when offroading I will likely just strap it down in the rear cargo area vs mounting on the rear. Just need to relocate my rear camera and my Kentral front plate holder to the rear bc my 4wp bumpers dont have a spot to mount the tag.

Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

I prefer to carry a spare. I have had a sidewall puncture while offroading, like @AcesandEights mentioned, my plugs were useless for the sidewall puncture. I had a spare, so we were able to change the tire, and be on our way.

But to the OP's point, do you need it?

For what its worth- my current vehicle does not carry a spare, only a puncture kit and a pump (Designed that way from the factory). Last summer, I hit a piece of road debris and shredded a tire at speed. Puncture kits work great when there is a still something to seal.
I would not want to be anywhere out off the grid without a spare. Maybe its just me, but that would make me very uncomfortable.

I have never carried a “full size” spare off road. While ya may need a spare to get ya home (or at least back to civilization) it does not “need” to match And it does not “need” to have good tread. There are lots of decent used tires that will “get ya home” behind most tire shops. And of course ya already have a “spare” hanging on the back.

Everyone like different things but spare tire deletes look terrible. Plus what are you going to hang your Overlander Spare Tire Trash Bag on so everyone knows how rugged you are?

Some people would say if you have a limited slip, you need a full size spare...which you could take from the front to the rear.
