Wherever you go, there you are!

Aug 02, 2024

I am moving to Lincoln, Nebraska the end of September and I will seriously miss the deep forest 4x4'ing routes that I love to take here in Washington State. Since there are trails everywhere, I get out every few weeks and do overnight camping trips.

Best I can tell - there is nada, nothing, zilch in the entire state of Nebraska.. It looks like there is an area in northern Kansas, Tuttle Creek ORV and then most of the Colorado trails are west of Denver.. It looks like there is also an area in southern South Dakota.

Anyone in the area off-road frequently? I am probably going to be reduced to one trip a month instead my normal every 2 weeks but it is what it is. I also absolutely love the deep forest trails but I don"t think there are many deep forest areas anywhere even close..

So where do you Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota and Kansas Bronco peeps go for your off-roading fun?

We've briefly visited Badlands/Custer/Black Hills, SD. Think you'll find some nice adventures there. Most of your wheeling is right here in Colorado though. Sure, we see tons of Huskers too. Heck, on a typical July afternoon, there are as many Nebraska tags in Estes Parks, CO. as there are locals.

Cheers

Washington will be sorry to lose you! If you haven’t been there yet, get ready for VAST vistas with everything except… Mountains! And the difference is MPG between 80+ mph and 70+ mph is pretty staggering!

I am seriously going to miss the deep forest trails of Washington but new trail conditions and terrain will also be fun and exciting.

I might need to modify my current setup a bit to accommodate those new trails. Never been a rock climber and I assume most of these midwest trails, especially in CO, will have lots of rocky trails.

The Kansas Tuttle Creek ORV area is only about a 2 hour drive from Lincoln, NE so I assume that will be for my quick trips where I can still do my standard 2 day - 1 night trips. Anyone ever been there? What are the trail conditions and is that area great for off-roading trips?

The Colorado and South Dakota trail areas are about an 8+ hour drive each so those trips will be longer and I'll probably plan on staying 3 days and 2 nights when I travel for those.

I’m in Omaha Nebraska. I’m not impressed with Tuttle Creek all that much. That’s where you go if you like to play in mud - the worst foulest smelling mud you will ever encounter - and impossible to wash off. There’s a few hills to climb, but you can do everything in 2 hours. Its not worth the trip in my opinion.

The closest park that’s worth going to is Kansas Rocks, which is an hour south of Kansas City. I’m a regular there. They have an October Halloween night ride event you won’t want to miss. Camping as well, and modern amenities.

Next furthest out is the Southern Missouri Off-road Ranch (SMORR). That’s a rock crawler’s paradise for people in the plains states with nowhere else to go. I get down there twice a year. It’s about 5 hours away from Lincoln.

There is a Facebook Group called Nebraska River Crawlers that take regular trips through the backroads of Nebraska. Just last weekend they did a vineyard tour that looked like a lot of fun.

Awesome, thanks for the detailed information.. Keep me in mind if you make any trips as I am always down for some off-roading.

I'd be up for a trip to SMORR, it's about 4 hours north of me.

I live in Omaha (Bellevue) too. Thanks for the heads-up on the Facebook group. I just joined. Sounds like fun!

There is one ORV/4WD area in the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey, NE. I've been there only once, but it's as forest-y as you'll find here!

Southern MO/ Northern AR Mark Twain National Forest has a large number of forest trails. Many are quite challenging others are fairly easy.

Welcome to the Midwest! I also wheel a Wrangler Rubicon in addition to our BL Sasquatch.
