I installed the Ford Molle tailgate storage solution today. It’s part # VM2DZ-54407B00-A and retails for $99.

B39034D3-2DA0-4060-B020-76F55847DC91.jpegInstallation is a snap:
  • Start by removing the plastic accessory cover on the inside of the tailgate (use a panel removal tool and work from the bottom - there are 4 clips and them lift up and the 4 hooks on the top simply release).
  • The Molle panel has 4 clips that sit inside perforations in the tailgate and the bottom attaches via 2 more clips that are to the Molle panel with elastic to keep it tight top to bottom.
  • The sides attach to a pair of Velcro strips that you adhere to the tailgate and the mating surface is sewn onto the Molle panel
NB - the directions that come with the Molle kit advise to start by applying the Velcro to the tailgate but, I would advise against this because unless you attaches the Molle panel to the tailgate you won’t know exactly where the apply the Velcro so I wisely left this step to the end and positioned it on the outer most point to ensure the Molle panel is tight & smooth against the tailgate.

I am going to wait a day for the adhesive to fully set before I add the 5 bags & 2 smaller pouches that come with the kit.

I will likely also add some additional adhesive or perhaps a few rivnuts to the top of the tailgate and secure the top of the Molle panel better so the system can support more than the 10 pounds advised in the instructions.

I have a similar set up in my Jeeps and the tailgate is an excellent place for storage of easily accessible items like a flashlight, knife, first aid kit, recovery gear etc.

Here’s my JKU for reference

I installed one of these a while back. I like it better than the table. No need to drill holes, easy to install, and no rattling.

The clips on my molle grid don’t align with the slots in the tailgate, the middle two need to be sewn in about 1/2” over from their current position. Anyone else have this issue? I plan on returning it but don’t want to get another one with the same problem.

Mine fit fine - do you have a 2 door or 4 door?

The whole clips & adhesive Velcro mounting is a bit Busch league for me - I will be adding some physical fasteners to attach when I have some spare time.

I may be too late, but alignment is fine on my 4D model.

@Bschurr did you end up beefing up the fastening, I just dry fit mine but agree with your assessment-it needs some better fasteners to be useful! Curious what you ended up using?

the bag quality does seem pretty good!

Not yet but I plan to add a few nutserts around the perimeter and simply run a bolt with washer through edges of the Molle panel for some additional mechanical adhesion.

I have a similar set up that I installed in my JK & TJ so I am confident that this will be the right solution. (y)

I like it looks like a good place to keep my mountain bike tools in.
