Market vs. Keep It

I contacted my dealership to check in and discuss my build, which should be soon, 2/21. They had a customer cancel their Bronco order when the vehicle arrived on the lot. It sold in a day for 81k when the MSRP was 56k I believe. I shared this with a coworker and Bronco owner and he asked if I would sell mine or keep it. Dealership said they thought customers could drive them a year and still sell for 10-15k above what they paid. I don’t have any plans to sell at the moment. Been waiting too long. What about you? Thoughts?

I think the market for used cars is going to tank, and that in a year there will be a glut in the market for Broncos.

I don’t need the money.
For that matter, I don’t need the Bronco, either.
But, I’d rather have the Bronco.

Buying a new vehicle as an investment has generally not worked out unless it is some specialty deal, you never drive it, and you wait a long while to sell it. With the market right now, you might could realize a short-term gain on it, but that will change. Every Bronco sold decreases the unfulfilled demand just a bit more. It can be tempting to grab up a few bucks now, but thats going to be real timing dependent, and you still wouldn't have a Bronco.
For me, I'm waiting it out and then not getting rid of the truck. Heck, I have plans on the cheapo used Bronco Im going to pick up in a few more years once the demand and supply have caught up. Just one dude's opinion.

I highly doubt the market price will be that high in a year on a used Bronco. Things should have leveled out substantially by then. It may not be perfect. But it will be much better than it is now. To be totally honest I don't see the resale value being anything over original cost in a year. They will suffer some depreciation just like every other vehicle. Especially with all of the widely publicized first year issues that have been plaguing the Bronco. Potential buyer will be very leery.

Hard to say what the future holds it could go back closer to normal or it could even get worse. 3 years ago when I bought a new f150 I would have never dreamed I would get what I payed for it on trade last week.

I believe the car market will crash as it did around 2008 ... seems everyone has forgotten what a mess Detroit made. I think in a year or so there will be people who are very happy with the profit they made selling their Bronco .. and their will be people that are infuriated with being upside down in their Bronco. The car business aside, I think there are two camps ... those who feel the Bronco is just another vehicle, and those who believe the new Bronco is something special.

I have been a "Car Guy" since the 80s ... I went to tech school, worked in the industry, and although I got out and work in a completely different sector my love for cars has never been stronger. To me this new Bronco is what I wished for ... I hoped one of the automakers would resurrect a classic icon that I remember from childhood. I think Ford did that with the new Bronco.

I remember sitting in a 1969 Mach 1 ... Grabber Orange with a shaker. I remember sitting on my aunts lap and was enamored by the clock in the dash. That car put a mark on my soul ... I will take delivery of my Bronco with my Grandson. Perhaps 30 years from that time he will tell stories to his children as he sits with them on his lap in that Bronco. Money cannot buy moments...

I'm certain it will tank, but it will not be in a year. It's going to take about 2 years for the market to stabilize and production to ramp on new cars, which will continue to inflate the used car market. Just my opinion, of course.

I wonder about the other end of the market ... People overpaying for used vehicles --- $15,000 for a pickup from the 90s with 300,000 miles ... no matter how much you argue supply and demand, a 300,000 mile vehicle has 300,000 miles. Tires cost money, brakes cost money. Engines and transmissions cost money ... after spending a butt load of cash on an over-valued turd how does one afford to keep it running? As we saw in the 90s the American working class will be stuck with broken vehicles they cannot pay for ... Anyone remember the $10,000 Chevy Cavalier? Terrorists could not have done a better job with destroying America than Chevy did with that car.

No one can tell you with absoute certainty what the future holds in the car market. But one thing is pretty clear. There is nothing more common in our country than money. Broncos? Not so much.
Have a look at this chart of our money in circulation. The amount has more than doubled in the last ten years:

What will really blow your mind is when you go back over 50 years, the chart says it all:

If you want to trade away anything for a small gain in a faith based currency, go for it. But I would rather hold on to the asset. Even if it depreciates, the Bronco makes me smile.

Oh this is true! There's way, way too many stupid people with disposable income they are willing to spend rather than save out there. They are going to hurt pretty bad when this is all said and done, but I have zero sympathy for anyone stupid enough to drop an exorbitant amount of money on a really high-mileage shitbox.
