On Sunday I had my Apple car play on….displaying Google maps as I drive… awesome graphics….. really cool!!!

Anyway, I left my phone on the charging pad on the console as I drove expecting it to charge… after driving back from the beach 50 plus miles … Car play shut down….
Next my wife grabbed the phone… the Apple I-phone 11 was exceedingly HOT and shut off….the phone actually said “ will not be operational until cooled down”!!! We were without the use of my phone for 1/2 hour.

Insult to injury after the phone cooled it was at a 46% charge….

On Monday I checked in with another Bronco owner…. Sure enough coming back from Santa Barbara ( the same day) his phone charger overheated his phone and it shut off…

After speaking to my friend, I dropped by our dealership to check if their were any resolutions by Ford to address this issue…. No … nothing …
So I asked if they could formally move this issue forward…. They refused and said it was up to me…
🤬😡 (however this to be expected by my dealership)

On a side issue… their dealership service person said it was OK to run your coolant and Trans temp to 250F…. That was Ok…
This should tell you something about this dealership.

Called Ford Yesterday and formally lodged a complaint( about the charger issue and the poorly programmed Active Grill Shutter's).

Hopefully… the Bronco Nation can spread the word about the lux charging pad (overheating your phone)

I know this has been a complaint for some. For whatever reason, my Pixels have never had an issue with the wireless charger in our BN Bronco and they have charged really well off it. I miss it in my own Bronco. It's a shame that's how it operates for you :/

Why do they put these cheap wireless chargers in modern, expensive vehicles?? I would expect a top-of-the-line charger in an upper trim Bronco.

I remember you two! BN is big fans of you :) I love that pic of both the Broncos. Yep on the badge; that's where I put mine, just about one slot to the passenger side!

I thought it was my phone....
I have a Galaxy S8, I know it's getting some age on it, but still does it for me. But sometimes (not always) the phone just gets super hot to the touch and doesn't charge on the wireless charger in my Bronco. It's never done that to my wife's Apple iie phone. My phone has never done it on the wireless charger from the verizon store i put it on every night or in my GMC. Just in the Bronco.

I've read A LOT of complaints about overheating phones on the wireless charger.

I don't have the phone charger on my Bronco--wasn't willing to spend the extra $3500--but I did use the phone charger during Bronco Off-Roadeo on my iPhone 13 Pro this past weekend and it worked perfectly. The phone did get a little warm, but no warmer than when using Apple's own Magsafe wireless charger... so I'm not sure why it overheats some phones and doesn't seem to impact other phones at all. The only thing I can think of is the charger coils don't line up properly on some phones and that just causes it to spend more energy heating the phone than actually charging it.

Something about the iPhone wireless charging in the Bronco is not very efficient, and I think it’s the fault of apple.

If I’m just charging the iPhone wirelessly and not using CarPlay, it’s fine.

If I have the Car Play app open for any reason while wirelessly charging, the phone heats up and burns through battery.

If I use CarPlay and not the wireless charging pad, the battery lasts just as long as normal with no heating.

Same thing happened to my Galaxy S10+ in my new Wildtrak. My girlfriend said it may be the Otterbox case I had on it, but I haven't tested it without the case yet. I just plugged it in with a cord to charge after it cooled down. And then kept the cord coiled under the phone so it wouldn't sit on the charging pad.

This concerns me because I'm getting a Lux Package-equipped Bronco featuring a wireless charger. I'm curious about a couple of things. Was your phone left in the car before you noticed it was hot-to-touch? Was there a cover on your phone? Does your phone get hot if you plug it in rather than leave it on the wireless charging pad?

I have a case on my phone, but works consistently on other wireless chargers. First time was a 20 minute drive, when I got there, my battery was 1% lower than when I left home, and the phone was noticeably hot. Sometimes it charges fine without overheating, other times it just gets really hot without charging.

-The phone was not left in the car
-yes my phone has a standard cover on it.
-I charge it ever night on my Apple wireless charger… and it does not come close to getting hot….
-in my other ‘21 Bronco I used the USB port and it charged perfectly without getting hot.

My gut tells me if you are using the phone like Car play or Google maps it is using the battery….

However it seams like it can’t charge and be used at the same time with the Ford Lux phone charger (with most phones) without getting hot.

I will try to charge my phone without using car play… maybe it will charge perfectly (without getting hot) like Laura suggested in their BN Bronco.

This is kind of a bummer, man. It seems silly that we can't just drop our phones on a wireless charger and use the apps that are built into our head units without baking them! Until Ford offers some kind of solution to this overheating problem, I'm going to charge my phone using a cable and refrain from opening Apple CarPlay or Google Maps while it's resting on the wireless charging pad. Electronics are too delicate for their own good, apparently.

I noticed the same thing last night after picking up my new BadSquatch - 90 mile drive home - wireless CarPlay worked great, loved having Waze on the big 12" screen - but when I got home and grabbed the phone, I was shocked at how hot it was, and it was only about 40% charged (about what it was when we started the drive)

I affixed a "WOW" emoji to your post, @Calgeko because I was sad to hear that you had the same experience with your wireless charger (this seems to be a new trend; I've heard similar complaints by users on YouTube), and that I missed your "reveal" post about taking delivery on your Bronco. CONGRATULATIONS, Mark! 😃

We are thinking about this the wrong way- its not a bug, its a feature. Its your emergency hand warmer. With cold days and nights approaching, this is important safety gear. 😀

In all seriousness though, wasn't there some issue with this related to the Iphone Model? Like it didnt work well with 11's but was fine with others?

Still a drag. I had planned on charging mine off a cord in the console- My phone stays in my vehicle when I am at work, and that helps me remember, and keeps it out of the sun- but that was going to be convenient for short trips.

I have a Google Pixel so it is not an Apple issue. The charging pad overheats my phone very quickly. My phone also overheats when I plug it in to the cables...sounds like it may be vehicle specific at this point. Need to get the issue fixed though otherwise my Bronco is useless for keeping my phone charged and an issue on longer distances.

11/17/22 UPDATE - I got a new phone (Google Pixel 7) and it does not overheat or have any issues while charging on the wireless pad or plugged in. I thought maybe it was related to the vehicle or something but it looks like it may be phone specific...and not even model type, just some phones being asses and overheating for whatever reason.

For what it's worth, the 7-sp uses a different center console where the charging pad is in front of the stick shift and propped up at about a 70 deg angle (as opposed to flat on its back for the autoboring trans). I usually don't have any issues with my iPhone 11 overheating when on the wireless charger. The angle probably lets the phone vent off the heat a bit better. Anyway, just another reason why stick shifts are better. 😉

My phone works fine when plugged in. Typically for long trips my wife will use the charging pad for her iPhone and I’ll plug mine in. We don’t have any problems doing that.

This is not exciting news to hear. I have the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which seems to be very finicky with chargers in general, so can't wait to see how this works out with my charging pad. Hoping it is not an issue, because this is definitely a cool feature to have.
