Low Fuel & Distance to Empty (DTE)

Wow - Ford is not fooling around. When the low fuel indicator advises that you only have 25 miles left - it’s fact, not a suggestion.

I usually don’t run the fuel level down to super low but I was busy today and running a bunch of local errands so stopping for gas wasn’t a priority. I figured, let’s see go low it can go.

A couple of observations:
- There is no real-time display of distance to empty (DTE) aside from a warning at 50 miles left and then again at 25 or when you restart the vehicle. It would be nice to have a real time gauge.
- I started the Bronco and it said 19 miles to empty. I stopped and filled up and added 20.4 gallons - fuel capacity is 20.8 gallons

Don’t run out of gas - fill up when the low fuel indicator alerts! You have been warned.

Even though it says 20.8, the tank is actually bigger than that so you were still fine for a little while longer. On the two door, Ford says it’s 16.9 gallons but I’ve put 17.5 in before.

When stuff like that happens, I immediately think the gas station is ripping you off with pumps that are purposely mis-calibrated…

It is insane how much regulation the feds has in the gas industry.

I was a district manager for a gas station chain about 12 years ago. We had regular checks from the EPA and other regulatory agencies always out making sure the pumps were correct.

They’d come up, give us a business card and have us turn on the pumps while they did their measurement tests….. with gas prices like they are now, I kinda want to make myself one of those cards? Lol

That's a terrible idea, when do we start?

Don't forget that some gas is in the filler neck, so the tank might be 16.9 gallons, but you might be able to squeeze nearly a gallon in that filler neck.

I made a post 2 to 3 months ago about someone running out of gas with their bronco. When they hit 0 miles to go, the bronco ran out of gas.

0 miles till empty means 0 miles to empty.

Yes 0 means 0 on Ford dating back to my 2012 Raptor. Coasted into gas station at 0. Miss my old FJ, It had small reserve tank maybe 1-2 gal beyond E. But not Bronco. Wish bronco had 2 tanks like my dads old 1988 F350 Lariat. Miss that beast.

I just took fam on trip to grand canyon in bronco a week ago. It hopds roughly 21 gallons on E. It was uphill grade the whole trip. Mpg dropped to...wait for it...166 mile range on full tank of premium fuel midway there. When we left it was 240mi. Coming home, downhill, range jumped up to 270mi! Talk about a whirlwind of planning our desolate drive both ways. The mighty 2.3 MT with 4.70 axle is awesome. But going uphill on 37s with lift, 4wp bumpers, steps, winch, family and gear...be ready to stop every 150 miles max if averaging 80mph. I was in 5th-6th gear most trip, soft top, whipple high velocity air filter and couple other tricks to make the drive more efficient and enjoyable. Great trip. But the brick (bronco) has no idea what drag coefficient means...just drag lol.
