Learned a lesson about highway driving with no doors/roof today.

I had a quilt my grandmother made for me in the back seat, and it blew out the top onto the highway. I'll go back and try to get it, but I do have a couple questions about door/roofless aerodynamics:

  1. Is there a sheltered part of the vehicle at all (the trunk?) or should things just be tied down or heavy no matter where they are? I was considering getting a big ass duffel bag and putting anything I need in that.
  2. I noticed my rubber floor mat on the passenger side waving in the wind quite a bit. It only has a single snap in to the carpeted floor. Is this an accident waiting to happen? Should I remove floor mats when driving like this? The rear ones (this is a 2-Door) have zero snap ins, but I figure they are relatively sheltered back there, however I assume I know nothing at this point. I would not like to be the cause of someone else's accident, or just lose these things at high speed!

Thanks y'all; have a great weekend!

the “trunk“ area should be fairly safe. I think most vehicles produce a little backdraft/vacuum effect in the rear and it’s pretty tight back there anyway.

I haven't had the opportunity to remove my (complete) roof (or doors) yet, but this is a great learning opportunity... Especially because I also have a 2-door model. Did you retrieve your quilt?

I personally have a cargo net that I store in the Bronco for situations like this.

My cargo net was... uhhh.... "permanently borrowed" shall we say... from my father's garage about a decade ago. But it's very similar to the Ford Accessories net.

I remember picking up my first new car - a 1986 Mustang GT convertible, putting the top down, and peeling out of the dealership parking lot.
And, watching all my paperwork fly out the top.

I just laughed and kept driving...

I just about lost my rear Ford mat with the doors off, I 3d printed this. If you have the iag rear cup holders that should also help.

I will be buying a cargo net for the back of my Bronco! I learned with driving a Mustang convertible, anything you want to keep goes in the trunk! There is nothing worse than seeing something fly out the back in the rear view mirror…what the heck was that??😬 I do hope you were able to retrieve your quilt!!! I have many handmade quilts from my husband’s grandmother that I would be devastated if I lost them.

That looks brilliant. I see you're rocking the 4 door; not sure that design will work with the 2 door rear seat config. I'll have to think about something like that.

Or just gorilla glue 😆

Definitely going to pick up that cargo net; thanks for the link @RagnarKon.

@BuckYeah I wasn't able to find the quilt. It was a very windy day; lots of cross wind - I'll definitely go back and look again tomorrow in the daylight. I also feel guilty for "littering". Hmph

Depending on how often you’re going topless, might want to consider Bronco Soft Tonneau Cover. I’ve used it twice and it’s sole purpose is to keep things secure in the trunk. BIG downside is you can’t leave it on with a top.

I saw someone do these mods on it so the clips aren’t needed and I plan on doing this for the summer. They used a piece of wood and the existing accessory screw to attach the wood and drilled down to secure it.

Yah driving anything down the highway with no doors and top is no fun. I don’t even like to drive fast with the two front roof panels off. Very unrelaxing. Thinking that’s a mode best served for slow trails or site seeing.

Really?!?! I haven’t had the top and doors off the Bronco yet but the Mustang is great!! I am a sun lover so that might help! A good hat, sunglasses and hair ties are a must though! I can’t wait to go topless and doorless this summer!! I’ve been waiting years for this!!

Yep, slow is the key. Love my boat also but everyone is very happy when I stop and anchor. Enjoy!

That is cool! Looks like they don't make a version for the 2 Door; but honestly I think the cargo net should be adequate for my needs. Plus the 19 dollar price to admission is tough to pass up! :)

@TitsLaRue my wife and I took a tour up and down the highway today looking for it. No dice. Bummer. The good news is we do have a couple from her so that dilutes the sadness a bit. Hopefully a homeless person finds it and uses it to stay warm.

Yeah, I have to hold on to my hat over about 90-95...a little Velcro on the floor mats is a good idea...tie everything else down...be respectful of your grandmother

I put a lid on the back. This one came from Ford. Not only does it keep things from flying out, it provides a little security as well.

Have a 2 door and during the summer I was almost always topless and doorless even with the 50+ MPH gust days. I will say with 2 door you don't have to worry about the rear floor mats as they stay in there good, it's only the 4 door peeps who have to care about that. I have the cargo net on mine and it works great keeping everything under it stable. I also got a large plastic tote that fits in the trunk that I bring if I'm getting any items too large for the cargo net.
