Jill and I have been trying to get the Bronco sound system to be a little better. With every try we seem to get some adding benefit. Well we found another solution that may HELP the problem but it won’t 100% remedy it.

Sound deadening from Dynamat. It comes in sheets you cut to fit, whether it be 1 piece or multiple pieces layered up on itself. You peel and stick it into place and voila - it’s done. Put your speaker in and crank it up. You can always add more or less.

We noticed a considerable difference in the sound quality with the sound deadening material verses without it.

Really appreciate your videos,
A couple questions if you’ve got a minute.
The sound deadening material looks like it has a foil surface, it actually reminds me of a product called butyl. Does that interior surface need to be foil to return sound or do you think rollaway toolbox drawer liner would work just as well if sprayed with adhesive on the back side ?

The dynamat is not the same of the tool box mats. It is a thicker material. The foils on the stuff is something I haven’t use much of. It is almost like a heat reflective layer. I have used another item that did that for around the firewall and door.

most the other stuff I used from them didn’t have foil on it.

I went with JBL pods replacing the rear speakers and sounds great without overkill.

I have been trying so many variations for my Bronco testing Kicker 4" to Polk 4" to 6.5 etc in the search for a good while not an expensive upgrade. I decided to just replace the 4" with Kicker and stay with the standard 6.5 but what made the difference after speaking with Crutchfield for the back speaker was to use the Dynamat.

The sound is much crisper and has bass vs. tin can sound. IT is a MUST

I just hope Ford stops building the speaker covers with cheap materials I broke a couple of the clips for trying so many variations.

I have used a aluminum lined butyl tape that is actually a roof flashing you can find it at Home Depot or lowes. It is about an 6”-8” wide roll. It worked amazingly well for sound proofing my F250 when I dropped that noise 12v Cummins in there. It is actually quieter with the 12V than the 6.0 powerstroke inside the cabin. Just a cheaper option if you trying to save a few bucks.

I have had good results with poly fill, like in pillows, behind the speakers in motorcycle and model A. May not be as good insulation...

Yep !!!
That was my assessment as well,
It’s not so much that I was trying to save a few bucks, it’s just that I have a lot of butyl that you and I are speaking which we know can be quite expensive, I don’t know about Lowe’s flashing cost. My roll is a24” roll. I also have a massive roll of tamale cart liner as well.
I was originally posing the question as he said he had extensive experience in vehicle sound audio.
Obviously I appreciate your experience as well.
I’ve resolved to use the Butyl membrane I have.as I know how stellar the product performs.

Very nice work here and videos. I am going to purchase four new 4" speakers and follow your lead with the Dynamat and Foam Window Seal around the speakers. I'll report back as to how that goes. Appreciate your attention to detail!

Coming from a Miata, the stock Bronco mid package sounds great to me. Maybe my age has something to do with it (59).

The foil is likely a constraining layer over a viscoelastic layer that makes the material ‘dead’. I.e. it will absorb vibration. You want the dead layer behind the speaker so the sound and vibration from the back side of the speaker doesn’t interfere with the sound that radiates from the speaker cone. It also seals the cavity so sound doesn’t leak around it.

Dynamat is good stuff, but it’s heavy. A box of the stuff to line the cabin of an old mustang weighs about 30 lbs or so.

Another product to check out is lizard skin. Different approach to the same problem, killing road noise, and sound deadening. I think it’s a spray in product,. and very light.
Haven’t ever used it, but car restorers talk about it being a better than the dynamat. I used dynamat for my old mustang and am happy with it though.
