HELP! MY WIFE HI-JACKED MY BRONCO MOD

So, my original intent was to modify the Race Red OBX in the spirit of the Heritage. Fifteen52 Analog white wheels, white spear heritage pin striping, paint the top and grill white, and replace badging with something else.

Unfortunately, my wife sees the mod more as a fire truck or ocean rescue vehicle, rather than a legacy Bronco.

In the spirit of compromise, I gave in (as most still married couples do) and told her I won't mess with the top or grille but will still install a white Underground Graphics Heritage Spear Kit (on order), and a wheel package.

It's the wheel package that requires your HELP. Since she isn't digging the white rims, I decided to go with a more classic look. I'm thinking the American Racing Baja 17" Polished, or Outlaw II in either 17" or 18" Machine Clear Coat. Or maybe the Pro Comp 69 Series Vintage Polished Alloy in 17" or 18". The Baja looks cool, but only comes in 17'.

The big question.

If I stay with 18", I can keep the same tire package currently on the OBX (33" Bridgestone). Since I live in FL and only plan on light trail or sand, they should be fine. Plus, they ride super nice and quiet for everyday road.

If I go with 17", I'll have to replace tire package, but would probably opt for 35". Definitely extra cost, and not as everyday road friendly.

What to do, what to do. Opinions anyone?

A few ideas and suggestions....

1. Ask the wife
2. Reference the wife
3. Let the wife tell you what to do
4. See #1
5. If you choose any other path,
choose a second Bronco.

You can tell her what I've told every boss I ever had: "Yeah--got it--will do!"
Then I go and do just what I was going to do in the first place.

Well First off you did good by making your wife happy. Wheels and tires are a In the Eye of the Beholder type of thing. But if you really like the Bridgestones (I personally can not own those) then I would go with one of the 18" wheels they all look pretty cool and will look really good on your retro rig. But if you are looking to get new tires too then you can get the Bajas and maybe a less aggressive AT tire like the Dynapro AT2 from Hankook or one of the other makers. You would be surprised how well an AT tire rides on these things. the Sasquatch Goodyears ride really nice, and my brothers Toyo opencountries MT tires are really nice as well.

Go 17s on 35s all day. Go 18s on a Honda. If the wife says no to 35s, say its her turn to compromise by reverting back to your original heritage design. Then while she is thinking it over, instantly play some Rolling Stones "you cant always get what you want" to drive it home. Good luck!

I like your thinking. Can I add 35s to stock OBX without lift or removing crash bars?

Not and be able to drive it. 2" Puck style level/lift will get you where you need to be for 35s, and remove crash bars.

A sociological observation:
Ever know a woman who is really "into shoes?" Maybe you're married to one! They love shoes: shopping, trying them on, admiring them. How they look in shoes is very important. They may be a bit out-of-control in buying them. I think wheels and tires are the same for some men, many of whom are on these forums. We love cool-looking wheels. Big, black, aggressive tread. The manufacturers accommodate us by offering a plethora of styles and finishes. Tire companies extend cleats onto the sidewalls, giving them a more rugged look, even though that does little (if any) to improve performance. Macho, man!

MallCralwers are especially vulnerable to this. "90% of what I build," said my install tech, "Never goes off-road."

Mikey D, consider talking this through with your dearest: What do you want, how much is image, what kind of driving and trekking will you actually do? It seems your dearest is more into wheels than shoes!

So think about your psychology, folks! I'm strictly utilitarian in my approach: I want quality gear I can (or might have to) use, and am learning about all the variables that go into tires: tread life, grip, street noise, rock cleats vs snow/rain/mud--all that, for when I'm done with this OEM Goodyears. And you know--I get lots of compliments on my carbonized gray Badlands Sas!

We removed our crash bars for 37s and Ford removes the crash bars for 35s from factory. Tires too big not an issue, its if they're smaller.

4WP makes crash bars for larger tires though if you still want them for added safety after increasing your tire size. We might get a set for ours..TBD

I've seen folks stuff 37s on stock height so I don't think you need a lift if adding 35s.

If you do ever lift I'd avoid the pucks and go the coilover shock route (suspension lift). Just make sure to upgrade your upper control arms and maybe rear track bar as well.

We have 37s on 3 inch suspension lift and it still fits in our garage no prob. Drives perfect and smooth even at 100mph. Here a few pics. We recently removed spare tire to save weight and preserve the tailgate.

While reading your post, I envisioned a swinging pendulum. I'm now officially mesmerized 😴 . But seriously, you're right on. After much discussion and finding a few visualizers online (Stage3Motorsports has a good one), I'm leaning towards downsizing to 17" rims with 285/75 R17 A/T tires. That gets me a slightly bigger footprint. Now it boils down to, as you aptly point out, driving, image and trekking.

No aggressive rock crawling for sure in FL, but definitely light trail riding and beach driving.

What do I owe you for the Sociological session? 😵

Thank her. Cherish her. She has prevented from ruining your Bronco, There is a reason it is heritage and not "good looking" we left that in the past for a reason. Go thank your wife now for preventing you from making a horrible mistake.
