Hi all,
I have a 22' 4 door Badlands. I picked it up on April 29. Since then I have probably filled up with premium fuel at least 6 or more times. The first few fill ups showed approximately 355 miles until empty. The next few fill ups I decided to add gas after the pump stopped on its own. I then got approximately 376 miles until empty. Last week I filled up and the miles until empty said 288. My truck was at the service department this week for the windshield recall and I asked the advisor to look into this. He told me that the tech looked into the computer and didn't see anything wrong. The advisor said based on the gas mileage displayed, which was around 17mpg, 288 is what he's seen on Broncos. I quickly told him that my truck has a 20.8 gallon gas tank and 17x20.8=356 miles. The 288 would be what you would find on a 2 door with a 17 gallon tank. He said there is nothing for them to do. Has anyone else experienced this or heard about this happening? I know there is something wrong with the computer. Thanks in advance.

Don't have my Bronco yet, but my past 3 F150's had big flucuations in miles to empty with the 36 gallon tank, and it changes everytime I fill up, it can be higher if I've babied it or lower if I've been getting on it. All depends on previous mpg, and driving habits. The owners manual even says there will be flucuations. Don't panic...nothing is wrong.

True story
Friend of mine was working in FLA the 60s when a co worker bought a VW. The guy bragged about the gas mileage endlessly so they would alternate between adding gas to his tank and siphoning some out. The guy went nuts when he got 50 mpg and thought the engine was shot when it only got 20 mpg.Don't know if they ever told him.

Mileage can fluctuate vastly depending upon driving style. The computer is simply providing a calculation based upon the current fuel economy based on the driving style. I have found that the closer you get to E (empty) the more accurate the figure is.

The distance to empty figure is VERY accurate once you receive the low file warning. Don’t try to squeeze out a few extra miles thinking there’s plenty of extra fuel because there isn’t!

Hi there. This fuel display concern doesn’t sound like something we want you to experience with your Bronco. Could you please send us a PM with your VIN and the name and location of your Ford dealer? I'd be happy to look into how I can assist you on my end.

I hear you. I have a 2010 f150 fx4 with a 36 gallon tank and when I fill up it gives the same approximate mileage range within 10 miles or so. I have never seen it be off by 75+ miles even while towing.

I don't disagree with any of you. My point was that my driving style had not changed from my 6th fill up to my 7th. I get about 17mpg in the city and 19-20mpg on the highway. The miles until empty that I got is closer to 13 mpg average which is not accurate. I have to stress that the first 6+ fill ups all showed approximately 375 miles until empty. My driving style did not change. I would of had to avg 13 mpg to get 276 miles until empty. Thanks again!

If it makes you feel any better, mine is the same way. Fill the tank and it will say anywhere between 325 - 378 (highest I've seen so far) and I'm getting around 18 MPG. Keep in mind I will drive another 20-30 miles (give or take) before that number even moves.

Worst I ever saw it was around 288, filled up after towing a trailer about 200 miles, so obviously the Bronco thought based on that driving that's what it should be. But next day I drove it, the mileage til empty number went up! If only it did that every time :)

So it's a "stupid" thing, can't explain it, but it does little more than annoy me. Now if Ford ever figures out how to fix my "smart" wiper motor that can't work right... then I'd be happy.

I’m guessing it had something to do with being at the dealer, probably engine running and not being driven made it look like “current” gas mileage was terrible. So reduced estimated range. I note that my Wildtrack range at fill-up changes depending on if my last driving was mostly city or highway. I’ve even had it estimate 319 at fill-up and then adjust up to 336 after driving a few miles.

I have had the same experience, mine is a 2.7 with 20 gal tank , when I first got it and filled up it would say 326 miles to empty. Now it says 300. Seems to be variable and I wonder if it has something to do with your most recent mpg calculation?

A few other considerations is:

- The way you drive (heavier throttle or less)
- The type of fuel put in (93 octane or less/as well, fuel mixtures during summer and winter)
- Possible that other people who are in different altitudes and climates will vary
- Incline and declines in your trip
- Accessive idling

Not that these make up all the reasons and they could be the wrong reasons for some, but they are just points of view.
