Ford has filed a patent for a window-breaking device, neatly disguised as a grab handle on the inside of a vehicle. CarBuzz discovered the patent, filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

…

What makes this tool unique is the RF signal communication device for communicating with the drowning car. The signal can also be used to determine whether the occupant is still in the car or whether they successfully escaped. This will help emergency services locate said occupants of the vehicle. Ford's tool also comes with a battery and an LED light.

As the car sinks, another sensor will monitor the water level. As soon as the water goes over the top of the wheels, it will trigger the emergency signal and illuminate the LED light. Following that, you're on your own. That's where the window breaker and cutter come into play.

It's got a lot of potential. Just they way it's presented seems fake and James Bond like. It just seems a little over the top. If the release had come out on the 1st I would for sure think ot was a joke. Careful having the top off, if it gets wet in the rain it will activate the beacon and the black helicopters will come get you. Lol.

Yeah, and in an Outer Banks with street tires at that... I guess he proved that his Bronco could float?! On the other hand, we pulled him out, checked the air box for water, and when we found none he fired it up and drive it home. Hopefully he learned something from the experience.

Unfortunately most all window punches are not effective on breaking the new glass (especially if tinted) and also require a tremendous force to break if possible.

Depends on where you strike it. Problem with them is most people go for the middle out of instinct which is the strongest spot. A little pressure from a hard point applied near the edge will shatter tempered safety glass. If the door glass is laminated like most modern luxury vehicles your screwed but the bronco does not come with laminated side glass.
