Ford Dealers are Reportedly Lying to Get More Broncos
With each offense, the penalty grows more severe.

Sep 30th, 2021

The auto industry’s vehicle shortage has hit a new level of weird, according to a recent report by Ford Authority, who claims the Blue Oval is cracking down on a new and deceptive practice by its own dealers.
The report claims that Ford is dealing with another problem with its new Bronco, the much anticipated vehicle reprise that’s been mired in problems ranging from quality issues to pricing snafus.
But, of course, customers still want them and, to that end, so do Ford dealers.
The problem, according to Ford Authority, is that Ford dealers are reportedly going to great lengths to get more than their allotment, and some are even fabricating fake reservations for made-up customers in order to do so.
The move, says a follow up report in Jalopnik, could “bypass Ford’s stock allocation system, generating additional units for the dealer to sell.”
Well, Ford seems to be on to the shady practice and has established a program to combat it. It’s called the “2021 Bronco Customer Name Match Audit and Integrity Policy Reporting Platform” and it appears to amount to name-matching on orders all in one centralized system.
In addition, the platform requires dealerships to prove “that 60% of their Bronco buyers are people who had reserved a Bronco, with Ford monitoring sales each month.”
And the penalties for evasive or deceptive tactics are steep. Says Ford Authority, “Violating the rules one time will result in a warning while doing so a second time will cause the dealer to lose its future Bronco allocation for one month. Three strikes will lengthen that penalty to three months.”
High stakes in a time where dealerships need all the inventory they can get.

Good for Ford to realize there is an issue and to come up with a solution, with some bite to the penalties. Let see who the first dealerships are to get slapped...

All of this wouldn't be necessary if we could order our vehicles directly from Ford. I'll admit, the dealer may have a legitimate role to play in prepping, delivering and servicing a vehicle, but in this age of the internet, that role should change. Franchise protection laws are being challenged on a daily basis, most notably by Tesla. Elon's latest move to circumvent the dealer monopoly in Arizona, was to bypass state laws by opening a facility on an Indian reservation. Just like the internal combustion engine, the old ways of selling vehicles is sure to change in the not too distant future.

Yeah Ford, good job cracking down on a problem you created. They are not cracking down on dealers who are jacking up the prices though are they?

Some people need a dealer to hold their hand and guide them through the vehicle purchase process, others don't. Those of us who would like to skip the dealer entirely, are forced to comply with the system as it is. Hope this will change, the sooner the better.

Considering the current state of the industry, dealers will do anything just to have stock on their lots of any configuration...

So…. 40% can be fake orders? Seems like letting the dealerships ’off easy’.

Exactly. Saying 60% must be real customers just seems laughable. Does this almost encourage or embolden dealers to behave this way?

So if I read it right there are 5000 first editions that were produced. which would of course make that vehicle a collector item. I get that, I saw 4 First Editions in NW Arkansas that were bought in an auction from some dealers in Texas that were found to have abused the allocation system. These were going for $100k+.

I should have dug deeper into the story. Did they get taken away from the Texas dealers? Shouldn't they have re-allocated these vehicles? If the First Editions were MSRP for $71k who got the proceeds from the auction?

I agree this allocation system has some issues...

There were originally expected to be only 3500 First Editions and then Ford upped the figure to 7000 which essentially halved the “collector value” of the model. I don’t believe that production figures for individual models have been distributed but I am sure it’s less than 7k

Sadly, Ford has always condoned their Dealers abusing the System. They did it with the New Thunderbird, which killed that Car off, and, they continue to do it with the Shelby Mustangs, and any Special Variations SVT, SVO….
This “new Accountability Program” is just Eyewash…

Dealers are usually the ones who give Ford a black eye! There are good dealers out there. And I have to travel a little, but it’s worth it. I don’t deal with these bad dealers.
