F150 Raptor instead?

I am getting numb to the ride along videos and carefully choreographed rides with expert drivers. One thing unintentional and something I never gave much consideration for is a F150 Raptor. I knew nothing about them until I started watching the Bronco ride-along videos. I also didn't consider Raptors because of the price...yet here I am committed to spending the same on a Bronco. Am I the only one feeling this way? Is the Raptor off-road capable as they say?

Already have 2 trucks, that box is checked. The only thing that comes close to Bronco is Jeep.

Never had a inclination to purchase a Jeep the Bronco was Love .at first site.

I've wanted a Raptor since they were first produced, but as you mentioned, I always considered them out of my price range. When I originally budgeted for a Bronco, it wasn't in the Raptor range but it sure is now. If I could actually fit it in my garage, I would be much more tempted. They are awesome trucks.

Previous Raptor Owner! Downsizing to a Bronco. Bigggest difference is cost. I had $80k in my final build, tax included and was a great truck if u need that kind of truck. My 2018 lightening blue did everything I asked. But, I can buy x2 Bronco base, 2 dr, auto 10, 2.7k motor and SAS for same price as my 2018. Go figure?

I believe the Ford Raptor is a superb truck. In fact, last summer I bought a 2020 Raptor Scab. At the time, I was impatient to begin my adventures and felt the Raptor would be my solution. Immediately after the purchased an opportunity came my way to flip it.

raptor2.jpg

Although that Raptor would have served me well, the plan was all built on adventures out west and Covid made that plan unpredictable.

I also realized two disadvantages to owning a Raptor.
  • Most of my adventures will be in New England and eastern Canada. Those trails are narrow so the truck must be nimble. Compared to a Bronco, the Raptor is not nimble.
  • If I kept the Raptor, it would have been difficult to stay focused on the Bronco. In other words, I may have had regrets for not joining in on the rollercoaster ride. ;)

Yes, Raptor is 6 inch wider than a F-150. One really needs to use mirrors when driving on PA roads. Pros R, u can drive it all day long !!, it’s gets 20 mpg on hwy, and it doesn’t rust! One con is that bc it’s balanced, it spins easily on rt rear. A great truck.

My original plan was to trade in my 2017 Rubicon Recon on a new Bronco. The Rubi started having issues (2 serious episodes of death wobble) and it was just not very comfortable on long cross country trips. My wife began refusing to drive it. So we could not wait for a new Bronco and traded the Rubi in on a 2018 Raptor Super Crew. We love it! In fact my wife likes it so much she has claimed it as her own. (She put her "Air Force Mom" license frame on it!) It is an awesome truck with all the bells and whistles. It is very comfortable on the highway and it's just awesome on some of the local dirt roads. It fulfills the duties of a comfortable luxury vehicle for long road trips, a very capable working truck, a good (not great) tow vehicle for my early Broncos, and a very capable off-road vehicle. (Did I mention dirt roads are a blast at 80+ mph?)

All that said it's not a trail vehicle - way too big and long to fit on trails that are cut for rigs the size of Broncos and Jeeps. A Raptor makes a great overlanding vehicle for back roads and mild trails but you'll never see one on the harder trails in Colorado or on the Rubicon or on many of the Moab trails. So, to answer @Soupcook 's original question, it really depends on what you intended to do with your new Bronco. If you wanted to do harder "trails" then wait for the Bronco. If you wanted it to do mild scenic trails and backcountry roads the Raptor might fit you better. It is very capable off-road - it's just limited by it's size.

I love the Raptor as well @Soupcook but I just don’t want a pickup. Otherwise it would be a worthy addition to the stable.

And, as others have astutely pointed out - it’s not really a Bronco alternative in terms of tight & narrow off-roading.

Good luck with your decision!

It’s a Truck. If you ever want to venture off-road in a nimble vehicle with the top, and doors off, you used to be stuck with ONLY Jeep. Now, you have the Bronco as a viable choice, I traded my Jeep to buy a truck, sold my truck to buy my Bronco.

Smart man! Fun wise and investment wise. There is huge demand fir now new and most likely used Broncos, thus they will hold value. Recall the Toyota FJ Cruiser, well they never lost value and still demand high returns. When I get my 2021 model I plan to replace it with a 2023 with little cost, if my luck holds.
