Dropdown tailgate anyone?

I occasionally do a little bit of hauling of wood with my 2 door, and I'm thinking it might be fun to convert the swing gate to a drop down tailgate. Has anybody else thought about this? It seems like the clearance with the OEM bumper might not be very good, so that might need to go, but I haven't looked into the guts of the rear end that much to know if the geometry would work.

The 2021 BDS SEMA build had one, looked great. I'd love to see more people do it. 2021-ford-bronco-by-bds-suspension_100813634_h.jpeg

Ford had a clever tailgate on station wagons that would swing like a door and drop down don't know why they didn't do that, just put the spare on a swing out rack mounted to the frame to clear the door/gate.its how it should be in the first place

Oh mah gaaahd that thing is stunning.
If someone made that a kit I'd be all over it; I can imagine quite a bit of custom fab went into it. What a beauty! Swoon

Same, but I still do like carrying a spare. Guess I could ratchet strap one to the roof šŸ˜

Totally, I like a spare too. I was thinking I'd make a nice wooden bed and then do something like this:

Oh nice! And if someone's that far into fabbing anyway they could do the swing out carrier; what's a lil more.

Yep you’re right. I love the dual action tailgate on my Ridgeline. Best of both worlds.

If you have a build blog or something I'd genuinely love to see some details if you're implementing a pickup bed, particularly the drop down tailgate aspect.

I'm trying to figure out what tailgate this is; it doesn't appear to be from a newer maverick, ranger or f150 that I can see. Then how are the internal hinges implemented? I just love this.

If you watch the BDS video series, they give a little detail into the tailgate. They used a Ranger Tailgate, fitted for the Bronco.

I have been toying with building one too. I think starting with a 4-door Black Diamond with an Advanced transfercase is where I'd start. The rear doors would access the equipment tunnel a 'la the Rivian R1T. I do like the 2-door look, but I think the bed would be a tad too short.

Love the cargoglide system and overlanding rack… A person could likely do an easier conversion using a Maverick, though you would not have a body on frame build but a unibody vehicle…

I might have to study how much Mavericks are being modified for off-road out there…

The SEMA fire fighting Bronco is amazing… Such a model by Ford would be popular, me thinks…

They did, I remember my dad having such a wagon, but where to store a spare would become a problem
