Discussion: Does pink belong on an off-roader?

When Ford brought back Bronco, the goal was to get people outside and off-road in an SUV that could handle the wild. The 2020 press release introduced a younger audience to the history of the legendary vehicle and reminded Gen 1-5 owners of the power and fun the 4x4s provided for decades:

“Bronco gave rise to the fun and versatile off-road SUV in 1966, becoming the first enjoyable sport utility vehicle for those who wanted to live, work and play outdoors,” said Jim Farley, Ford chief operating officer. “Like the original, the all-new Bronco family is engineered to take you to epic places, with capability to deliver confidence on any type of terrain.”

“Bronco delivers on the common thread desired by enthusiasts – authenticity,” said Mark Grueber, Ford U.S. consumer marketing manager at the time of the release. “Building Bronco as Ford’s distinct outdoor brand includes a unique network of experiences, community and engagement that extends far beyond ownership of Bronco and Bronco Sport models.”

Bronco’s defining outdoor-focused features were later revealed to include a transfer case, available locking differentials, bash plates, and underbody protection, and fun-to-get-dirty and easy-to-clean materials. Enthusiasts had no doubt that this vehicle was tough and made to be used.

It was also created to be modular, from the Accessory Ready points to the heavy-duty bumpers, top options, and more, with the goal of letting you make your Bronco your own.

Fast Forward to Deliveries and the Present
This is where it gets interesting: People began modifying and accessorizing their vehicles in a way you wouldn’t. Tune into any forum, subreddit, or Facebook group, and you’ll see people removing trail sights, adding low-profile tires and big rims, or doing a spare tire delete.

While some owners don’t see the purpose of turning a 4x4 into a street-only vehicle, others say they bought it, let them do what they want, whether that’s softening the look or never letting it touch dirt.

So, the question is, does the Bronco brand only equal “rugged” in your mind, or can share space with a floral-wrapped Bronco that may never leave the pavement –– or one that does?

What appearance choices do you think go too far on a Bronco? What takes away from that highly capable and durable aesthetic? Is it graphics? Colors? A factory special edition collab?

Should Broncos be saved for the off-roaders or outdoorsy owners who want to make use of the 4-wheel-drive benefits, or are they equally at home in the driveways of people who want in on their cool looks and open-air concept, who may or may not get that the knobby tire sounds, trail drives, and washable interiors are part of the fun? Do brightly colored, fun Broncos belong around campfires and on the toughest Moab trails, or should they look like they blend in with nature?

If the Bronco world becomes flooded with grumpy bumpers and sparkly accessories, driven by owners who might not align with the original values and intent, or trims are introduced that don't match your idea of Bronco, does the brand lose some worth to you? What will make you leave the brand, or are you in it for life, no matter what other owners do or Ford releases from factory?

I am of the mind that people can do what they want with their Bronco.... That said I still am going to make fun of people for purchasing the wrong vehicle for the task at hand...LOL If they say it is for the street and not off road use then fine... BUT when they use large rims with rubber band tires and try to tell me it is built for off road? No... At that point they are misleading others... I do not appreciate that and I will speak up.

One of the things I love most about the Bronco is how customizable it is, and I think that is a big reason it has become so popular. As more people with different tastes buy Broncos, more accessories get developed, which only makes the platform better for everyone. That variety does not take away from the Bronco’s identity, it just shows how versatile and well thought out the platform really is.

And why is that for you? More because Bronco should be different than Jeep and have its own traditions, or because that doesn't scream serious off-roader in your opinion?

Personally, I'm not into the display in my Bronco, but I've been gifted patches and a tiny plastic but realistic horse, and I like the patches for my headliner when I know the person, and I have my plastic horse displayed on a surface in my living room. No hate to the ducks/bucks; I just like when it's a unique or meaningful item.

That's a great point. The aesthetic has to match the activity in that instance, much more so than a street Bronco for the street.

Interesting take!

More two-door half and whole roof racks, please 😅 I would like more of a tube style, simply for the look.

I am a utility guy..... the aesthetic (as far as I am concerned) can be anything that suits you.... BUT representing utility when it is incorrect really bothers me..... Example on aesthetics:

My youngest is one of the toughest guys you will ever meet.... has fought MMA, teaches Maui Thai, is a black belt in Thai Kwon Do, trains in Jui jitsu with the reigning world champion unlimited weight class.... and yet he loves pink... I think it may be a contrarian position but I sure would not argue with him.... LOL

Aesthetics are a personal choice, personal opinion. Utility is simply facts.....

Two things that have bothered me about folks and Bronco are the tie rod and rack complaints when modifications and driving technique haven't been accounted for, and people seeing the animated BeamNG crashes and avoided Bronco because of those instead of relying on, say, IIHS data.

I've seen some personal choices that are simply looks I wouldn't do but that doesn't affect my opinion of them or Bronco.

I personally do not care what others do to, or with, their Bronco.

If they want to customize a pink mall crawler then have at it.. I built mine the way I want it and the owner of that pink mall crawler might view mine and think ---> yuck...

I was a long time Jeep owner and I did not like the angry eyes look that many did to their Jeep's. But I never hated on those who liked them or did the modification...

To each their own...

Also, not sure why some continue to hate on the Jeep duck thing. If they are having fun doing it, then so be it...

It's just a bit immature for my tastes. But I'm an old man car guy. If Jeepsters want ducks to be a thing, good enough, but I hope with Broncos we don't get into a similar "thing".

Look at us all being so level-headed about others' Broncos! No right or wrong answers, just wanted to see where we are all at.

I'll tell you what will make me leave Bronco: a lack of choice and reduced capability.

I've had multiple Cherokees, but the good ones. If Bronco ever turned into a Blazer or Cherokee situation, going from boxy to this, I'd be out so fast.

And if Jeep ever brings back the XJ, I'll be at the dealership that day. While keeping my Bronco, of course. I love driving square vehicles, because they aren't what every other SUV looks like these days.

Color is up to the owner.
I rather see a hot pink 4x4 in the woods than another 50 shades of grey mall crawler in the parking lot at the half dozen upscale restaurants in town. One place has 100 cars at lunch an none of them are anything other than black, grey of white.
But some colors can by pulled off by a Jeep, they don't look right on Bronco.

Ha, as an Oxford White, then Carbonized Gray owner, I don't disagree.

I love true colors for Bronco. Not for me, but I like the variety, and I think Velocity Blue, Race Red, etc. all look great. I love the Stroppe; it makes sense with the history. I like a bright pink Bronco. It's fun to spot a Free Wheeling.

Some of the Jeep-esque colors feel shocking at first on a sixth gen to me too, but I think that's because Bronco was introduced with the palette it was. Grabber Lime wouldn't be my first choice, but as long as I can still pick a neutral, it doesn't bother me. Bright colors are feeling more normalized and I'm adjusting to them.

I still want to see all Broncos being used to their fullest, whether that's the utility for whatever outdoor hobbies, capability off-road, or top back/panels or roof off. They're too fun not to use in those ways. I want my Bronco to live. May the transfer case be used in others', even if it's solely for on-road safety in winter climates. That's also more important to me than any aesthetic choice -- that people know what they have, and how to use it. I want them to be safe, have fun, enjoy learning, and be a part of the community. We all benefit from that.
