Death wobble?

So while my car is in the shop for a shift linkage replacement (anxiously awaiting the arrival of my BD), my girlfriend was nice enough to let me use her Jeep to get to work. Several times on my way home from work today it happened, the infamous death wobble. Then it had me thinking, has anyone experienced this yet in their new Bronco? Or heard stories of it happening? I know this isn’t an exclusive Jeep problem but more of a 4x4 thing.

Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

If I remember right I think this is a solid front axel issue and shouldn't be an issue on the Bronco. Someone please correct me if this isn't true.

It has happened on F series trucks for a few years as well which have independent front suspension. However, I've had two F150's and currently drive one and have never experienced the "death wobble".

One of the big likes is that the Bronco is a much more road worthy vehicle, due to IFS. Loses a little articulation off road. Overall though a great vehicle!

Death wobble is found on solid front axle vehicles only, which now is Wranglers and heavy duty 4x4's trucks such as Superduty's. Happened on older GM and RAM 4x4 trucks with solid front axles. Having good solid suspension components helps alleviate. One of the critical factors is when increasing the unsprung weigth such as larger tires and or wheels, you also need better shocks and steering stabalizer. I have a Superduty F350 4x4 with 36" KO2 tires but when I upgraded the tires I replaced factory steering stabalizer and shocks with Bilstein and have never experienced death wobble. My Wrangler the same, upgraded tires and wheels and then replaced steering stabalizer with Bilstein and Falcon shocks. Both vehicles are solid at any speed they are capable of.

The Bronco will not experience death wobble because it's IFS.

Death Wobble is a phenomena of Solid Front Axle vehicles like Wranglers, Ford and other trucks. Bronco, thankfully, is Independent Front Suspension so it should not be afflicted with Death Wobble!

You got the answer for why this won’t occur with the new Bronco but, just a quick PSA from a Jeep owner - your girlfriend really needs to address her Jeep’s Death Wobble - it is truly dangerous!

For the record, true DW is not correctable without coming to a complete stop. What you likely experienced is pre-DW which involves steering shake and bounce and it will continue to get worse until it can no longer be corrected by slowing down or adding steering input and develops into full blown DW!

Tighten all the things. If it continues to happen it will literally destroy every linkage component holding the axle on, and wear out every bearing and seal. When I bought my jeep, it was having the dw pretty bad. Thing was driven hard and neglected by the previous owner. I pretty much had to replace every single heim and flex joint holding the axle, replaced inner axle seals, front u joints, rebuild the driveshaft cardon, ball joints, wheel hubs, and pinion seal.

Loose steering or worn out components can manifest problems in ifs, but the failure isn't the same kind of harmonic feedback loop that gets worse and worse. More likely a tie rod will fail or tires will wear out funny.

No wobble. Sold my 87 Wrangler after getting the Bronco. Anything over 65 was scary in that thing. Last week decided to see what the Bronco had, hit 90 for a few seconds, no wobble, just a smooth ride.

I have not had anything resembling a death wobble in my BD. 6500 miles in now.
I have experienced several death stares from my wife, however. This is due to the usual nonsense and idiocy that I exude on a daily basis. But obviously that is not the fault of the Bronco.

Thank you for that! I let her know as soon as I got home and will be sure to pass this on. She’s only had it for about 6 months so she just now learned about the whole “death wobble” thing.
