Dealer "Pre-owned" Broncos - wow

When a dealership lists 8 "pre-owned" Broncos for sale (they aren't just listed -- I saw them on the lot myself) and one "new" one... WTH is going on??

The 'new' one is a Demo, but four have more than 100 but less than 300 miles. The black OBX has 6,701 miles and appears highly customized (including lousy looking Bridgestone tires) for which they want $67k. The two-door yellow FE with 4,738 miles is nice, but I dunno about $82k nice. And the 4-door non-squatched 2.3L Badlands with 9,413 miles at $63k -- someone will bite, but geez. They might not be able to sit for a while.

I dunno, I just found it odd... Are there just that many people with "buyer's remorse"? Or is something else happening here?

(Disclaimer: I was also very frustrated driving by a Ford dealer and seeing 9 broncos on their lot while I'm still waiting for one. Didn't see most were 'pre-owned' until I looked it up.)

I get that. And maybe a couple, yeah. But this is a relatively small to midsize college town. Just seemed odd.

The dealership may be buying used from other dealerships and flipping them.

Option #1: Think about it, how many posts have you seen here or "the other site" with people talking about the cheap plastic interior, or the excessively loud soft top, or anything else for that matter? And how many of them happen to drive luxury cars? It's called "The Next Big Thing". Everyone wants it, but not everyone likes it.

Option #2: People are greedy. They see that dealerships and online car sites are offering big money for a used Bronco. Some of them never had intentions of owning a Bronco, figured they would scalp from the start, hell it was only a $100 buy in.

That and maybe gas prices and inflation have a little to do with it also . Things are a bit different for a lot of folks that put down that $100 way back in 2020 .

True, things are very different.

I'll be the 1st to admit, I drive my v6 Mustang 3-4 days a week (commute 75+ per day) because of gas prices. But at the same time, 8 used Broncos for sale, I highly doubt those have been on the lot since last August. My point being, if it's because gas is so high right now, then the only reason you are buying is to resell at a profit, gas prices been high since I got mine back in November. And I have an extreme hatred for scalpers, that's just me  Simple theory, if you can't afford it... DON'T BUY IT!

Edit: Just wanted to say, if people haven't figured it out by now, I'm old school, and I don't have much of a filter if any. I say what I feel.

If a dealer buys from another dealer or anybody it's now a used vehicle, mileage doesn't matter, title change makes it used.

I think what has happened is ,
Dealership “employees” reserved just like anyone else.
Always intending on flipping them.

IMO - it’s just people trying to make a buck.

How many of these are "backups" that people ordered with a 2nd, 3rd or 4th dealership in hopes of getting a Bronco faster and then dumping it when their preferred build became available? Some likely come from auto auctions (repo'd, surrenders, dealerships closing and liquidating assets), customer flips, etc.

They cant be customer bought and returned, that makes no sense. No reason to buy it for a week of driving, better not to buy at all. Not that many stupid people that would buy through that one dealership.

Dealers bought reservations and have put them ahead of other reservations and now sell them on their lot as though a purchaser has backed out.

I hate to say it, but it does make sense.

I bought mine @ 3% below invoice, about 30 miles from my house. Assume I drive it home, sell to another dealer 20 miles away (for a nice profit), I'm now at 50 miles. Throw in a couple of joy rides... you know to show the peeps in town how cool I am to own one. I could see 100 miles or so on the odometer. And to take it 1 step further, I talked to a dealer last September, he was offering $15k over what I paid for mine. Said they were so rare back then he'd offer that $15k to anyone who wanted to take it. Because they would throw a cheap lift, some tires on it and still sell for a profit on their end.

Only problem with all that is, I kept mine! :)

That's kinda what I was thinking, especially w/regard to the Sub-300-mile ones, which are probably test drive miles. I wonder how many of these were 'ordered' by dealership employees and then 'sold back' to the dealership. Gives them stock on their lot to sell while the employee makes a few bucks.

I've been monitoring the amount of used broncos for sale the last 3 months as well. Its for a combination of reasons ranging from flipping, gas prices, buyer remorse, various first model year problems etc. but at the end of the day its primarily because the economy is in the dumps and everyone is liquidating their assets to service other debt and/or keep up with inflation which is at a 40yr high. No one is buying for the same reasons. Plus no one is buying anything if its not necessary right now = stagflation. So unless you are in a govt job, commodities and utilities you aka most folks are feeling the hit. Honestly, markets (housing, car, stock, crypto etc) need to correct and they are. Its just a question of how low will it go and how long will it last. I don't know how low it will go but it will last at least another 2 years.

Ps-we still have our bronco at NT Auto (Grateful). Going strong since 9/2021 when purchased.
