Charging Pad

I have the factory charging pad in my truck. I was on a 2.5 hour drive on the x-way today. Phone was at 79% so I placed it on the pad to see how long it takes to get back to 100%. After an hour I stopped and looked at the phone. There was a message on the phone that the battery was to warm and the phone shut down/stopped charging. The manual says to take it out of the case. I did that for about 45 minutes and got the same message. I let the phone cool between charges for about 1 hour. Anyone have this issue? The phone is an iPhone 12 Mini. I've had it a little over 2 years and it's in mint condition. The case is a very thin small case as well.

yeah same here with an iphone 12 Pro. The charging pad is absolutely awful, might even consider it a firehazard. To Ford's small relief, I've yet to see any car with a good one in it. I've seen videos of replacing it with one from mabett, but I think I might just replace it with a standard shelf. FMC should have just not included it, in my opinion.

I have the Mabett one and I have experienced the same thing. Using wireless Carplay in the hills, and after about an hour I received an alert that the phone was too warm and shut down. I agree with Cake, this issue is common. Every car I have been in with a wireless charging pad has heated up the phone. My wife's Volvo also has a wireless charger that leaves a phone pretty warm. I have only gotten the 'too warm' message from the Mabett in my Bronco though.

So can I assume there is a electric connector that I can unplug so it's not hot all the time? I will have to look into that. I think I can make a cover for it and use it for storage. Other thing I might be able to put my GMRS radio in there. If I can then maybe I can use that wire to plug the GMRS into. Thanks for your feedback.

Unfortunately I’ve found the wireless charger useless

I have the same problem with my IPhone 13 charger that I plug into a wall socket, the reason why they heat up is because they have been wired for fast chargers, when I use the older style plug-in adapter hooked up the same way to my wireless charger, there is no charging heat related issues.
However when I use the older 2.0 amp charger it takes much longer then the 3.0 amp fast charger, however even though it shuts down it still charges faster than the old 1.5A to 2.0A chargers.
I would say that most of the vehicles built today have the Fast charger adapter installed in the vehicle, and almost everyone will experience this every now and again, especially if you are using your phone for GPS or Music apps or for that matter any App that you are using during charging…

I know that there is definitely an electric connector you can unplug because I used it to install my Mabett wireless charger. The product listing on Amazon has the installation instructions. You can use them to find the connector. https://a.co/d/iCJq8BI

BroncOitis’s comment makes a lot of sense. The need to charge faster so that using CarPlay is not a net drain likely means added heat and so I bet the chargers are right on the limit.

At least there are the USB outlets I can use when running my GAIA maps. I'll get the wire disconnected. I hope to use it to run my GMRS radio. Thanks for the feedback.

I also recently put in the Mabett wireless charger and I'm very disappointed with it. My phone gets way too hot and never fully charges. Probably going to take it out.

Installed the Klutchtech wireless charging pad. The phone does get a little warm, but charges fine. Curious, are all of the Posters using iPhones? Mine is an android. I do have an iPhone for work that doesn't appreciate wireless charging.

I have an iPhone as well and I have the same issues in mine. Gets so hot the phone tells me it cant charge due to battery heat. Very disappointing because that wasn't a cheap upgrade to add a charging pad that I cant use for more than 15-20 min. My wife has an explorer ST that doesn't get hot when charging but it's got a rubber material on it not plastic.

The charging pad is horrendous. I experience hot phone, too. I am at the point that I just use a cord that connects in the center console.

I've never had the overheat issue but my phone battery would drain instead of charging while using wireless car play. I changed the pad to this from Amazon Maxzina Fit 2021 2022 2023 Ford Bronco Automatic Center Control Wireless Charger Charging Pad for 2023 Bronco Accessories 2/4 Door and now my phone actually charges instead of running down. I have the iPhone 14 Pro.

Wireless chargers in general, across the board, do not work very well and cause devices to get very hot. I use mine to store my sunglasses.

I Use the USB plug in that area instead it charges way faster, supports car play and Does not overheat. If you want to charge it even faster the USB port on top of the dash by the windshield charges and does not automatically connect to bluetooth/car play. I have a Droid and same thing here the with high heat and slow charging. I haven't used it since my first week of ownership because my phone felt like it was being cooked. On Amazon I got a Bronco branded piece of leather so I can still put my phone there without the wirless charger trying to connect
