Bronco's floppy windows FIXED!!

As I'm sure many of you 2021-2023 Bronco owners are aware... the frameless windows are uhh... not the greatest. They tend to snag on the weather stripping when you open the door, they get loose over time and start wobbling around, it's just overall not an ideal situation.

BUT, Ford released a software update in mid 2023 that largely (but not completely) resolves the issue. The windows will now automatically shift down when you hit the unlock button on the key fob—good stuff. So a few weekends ago I installed that software update.

Your dealer can install this update for you, or if you want to buy the hardware yourself, I have a video on how to get started with FDRS.

Also shout out to @B MIller for his video from a year or so ago. Once the update is installed you can snug up the windows a bit.

Thanks for the insights and the tutorial. Another item to add to my list for Bronco edits.

I’m curious why software updates like this have to be done by the dealer verse over wifi while parked in my garage? I connected the Bronco to my wifi and turned on auto-updates to ensure all stays up to date. I guess all does not mean ALL.(?)

My guess is no. It’s likely the service group only does the service work. You will likely have to schedule with the repair shop for the update. That‘s how it seems to work at my dealership.

Seems like an over complicated bandaid for a problem that may or may not exist. I don’t lock my vehicle very often so now I need to hit my key fob every time I open my doors?
My windows have always worked perfectly. Proper adjustment is the key. Is the window design so flawed that they are doomed to fail over time?

Again I own two other vehicles (one is a Mustang) with this same frameless/drop design that have never had any issues. So what is inherently different on the Bronco?

Yeah, not all modules are capable of being updated over-the-air, and some updates are excluded.

The DDM/PDM is actually capable of being updated over-the-air, but for whatever reason Ford hasn't made it available as a Power-Up update. It I were to guess, this update was excluded because it changes functionality and isn't a strictly necessary update. Or it could be because the update is too big to be installed OTA. Who knows.

The update doesn't change the existing functionality, you don't lose anything. It just adds an extra feature to automatically drop the windows when you hit the unlock button on the key fob. That's all.

I wouldn't go as far to say that the design is flawed. It actually really easy to open the door in a way that it doesn't cause issues, I demostrated that in the video. But in my situation I have kids and a wife that open/close the doors without accounting for the fact that it's a frameless window, and they were putting extra stress on that weather seal and the window, causing the windows to loosen up over time. So yeah it's not so much that the design is flawed, it just doesn't stand up to rigors of life (or at least my life).

Yah I totally understand it doesn’t change anything except to drop a bit with fob. My point is - it only helps AFTER you use the key fob. There are countless times a person may open the doors without any intention of driving, or like I said never a need to unlock an unlocked vehicle. It’s a total bandaid for a problem that can be corrected with a proper adjustment. My Bronco, my Mustang, my Audi all have the same design and all happen to be working perfectly.

I guess if any of them stopped working under the warranty period, then it would be back to the dealer to let them correct the issue.

I place my left thumb against the door, lightly, while pulling the door handle out with my other four fingers. The door does not move, the window drops then I swing the door open. Like RagnarKon, I too have people in my life that just do not have the time nor the desire to learn door opening, weatherstrip saving, procedures.!

edit .. watching the video - now I understand, gotta buy the FDRS hardware to do the software update :)
