So i got my 2 door and want to mount steps on the rock rails for making it easier to climb in the back. However im slightly worried about the fact that it appears (to me) that the "vehicle weight supporting rock rails" are actually mounted to the body and not the frame.

Can anybody confirm that its safe to put something like steps on the rock rails if they are mounted to the body and wont bend it/harm it?

Ford offers a bolt on step so it will be fine . I believe the Raptor has a removeable full length step board that bolts to the rock rail also .

why would ford mount rock rails to the body and say they support 1.5x weight of the vehicle?

thats what im confused about.

Either its a lie from ford (doubt) or the frame somehow extends the the area where it seems the body is located and we are just looking where we can see instead of whats under it

The funny thing is, I keep hearing that the Ford rock rails aren't strong enough because they are body mounted and yet I haven't seen anyone's Bronco sustain damage because of a rock rail failure.
I'm not saying they are just as strong as frame mounted rail or even close, but for a large majority of us they will work out fine. I'm sure if you are a serious rock crawler, you could find a way to damage them.
There just aren't many AM welded rock rails available yet.

I believe the Ford side steps are mounted in the same manner so it should be fine for the rock rails.

Body mounted is plenty strong for the situations that probably 90% of broncos will be in. It’s able to support the weight of the vehicle and a light to mild impact without damaging the body because it spreads the force over a larger area. Same thing if you add steps to it, the weight applied to the step is spread through the slider to the mounting bolts. In reality frame mounted rails don’t offer that much more strength due to the distance from the frame to the outside of the body. The distance amplifies the force placed on the mounting hardware so everything would have to be heavily overbuilt to handle the forces. It’s pretty basic physics and mechanical advantage of lever stuff.

They support the weight of the Bronco easily.
The IAG steps are excellent and hold 300lbs, they do not bend the Rock Rails at all.

Support 1 1/2 times the vehicle weight.
I have a 4dr Black Diamond and I'm thinking about adding those same steps.

Those are V2, they sit flush with the lower Rock Rail edge.

In fact I just sold the 4 of them cause I want the full length version below!

Dang it, I was perfectly fine not having those steps when I didn't know they existed. Now I have to buy a set, I hope you're happy with yourself.
As for the strength of the body mounted rails, I think they will be fine. Frame mounted rails would be easier to flex up into the body, causing damage. Body mounted is more rigid in relation to the sheet metal you are trying to protect. My Chevy has had body mounted Bully steps for nearly 20 years, work great. My GMC has factory running boards mounted to the body very much like the Bronco rock rails that are impressively stout.
Don't worry, it'll be plenty strong enough. I'm gonna go order some steps now...

I have those steps and have no issues with damage or bending etc. The only regret I have is that I wish the full length ones were available at the time. :cool:5F20E66A-1C9C-49D5-A9B9-87F1DC6A3C27.jpeg
