Ok so we just got out BN Badge and I went to mount it to the grille and I noticed that there are shutters in the grille. I was not sure what they are for. Anyone else know?
I suspect that they are to open and close depending on the weather hot or cold to keep the engine at proper temp. I also think they may shut in mud mode to keep mud from packing in radiator and intercooler.

Aerodynamic efficiency. They close to reduce drag. Makes the vehicle more fuel efficient. They can also be closed to warm the engine more quickly. Blocking off area to the intercooler will increase intake air temps raising exhaust gas temps witch heats up catalytic converters for emissions efficiency at cold start. There are lots of little things that help the engineers realize their goals.

Ecoboost F150s have the same thing. My 2016 had those.

Straight up heat managmeant shutters. Only fo rkeeping engine at optimum temperature. No aerodynamic reasoning behind it at all.

They auto adjust 14 different settings/positions and yes its mainly there to help engine temperature. Some folks keep them, some remove. I'm keeping mine. This is also another reason why I like the 4WP bumper design on my BL because it doesn't cover up these vents. See pics

We had them on semi trucks since the 50s strictly for optimum engine temps back then now it also involves emissions which are better at optimum temps.

What are Ford active grill shutters?
By Brent Dunn Ford Active Grille Shutters are special shutters in the grill that are opened and closed automatically to reduce aerodynamic drag while still allowing for proper cooling. The Active Grille Shutters are available on several of Ford's models, including the C-MAX, Escape, Focus, Fusion, and Taurus.

I remember trying to add a light bar behind the grill, because why not…and then realized these shutters were back there. That quickly ended that plan.

Very informative! I think they could use them to help reduce mud packing in the radiator too. Or it would be cool if they did

I’ve been having all the warnings like hill assist/pre-collision , sta bar, and others come up when in 4L rear lockers , driving on the beach and my dealership said that the vents are the issue. Under warranty and they replaced the top, now will be replacing the bottom as the problem persisted.
Does anyone see any correlation?
TIA

A lesser known reason for grille shutters on the Bronco is Sasquatch Observational Platform capability. A wandering Sasquatch, upon seeing a Bronco can gain access to your engine bay for purposes of hiding and other activities to prevent the general public of becoming aware of their existence (they have a little known but amazing ability to contort they're large frames into the smallest and most convoluted spaces!!) The purpose of the shutters is to allow them to peek out from behind the grille while they determine the timing and route necessary to avoid discovery. Hope this helps!
