Anyone treating their new Bronco undercarriage against rust?

We just did our OBX as we have been also doing with our Gladiator, we use NH oil and have had really good results preventing rust, especially since we live in New England and the roads get coated with salt the minute snow precipitation is forecasted.

I live in NJ and I need to know what this is lol. Our brine is 1000% worse than salt

Also New England.

I got my Focus undercoated and it didn’t really make a difference. Wasn’t intending on doing my Bronco, but I’ll checkout NH oil.

I have no idea if I'm going to undercoat mine or not. I did come across this video which has some interesting results. I'm sure you can get different results from different people just like everything else.

I’ve been using the yearly application, but instead every two years, they also have a wax application only for new cars that is lifetime warranty, I had a 2013 Wrangler that within the 2-3 years mark had developed a lot of rust and was very visible and a pain when replacing ball joints or brakes as everything it’s harder to remove. My Gladiator two years old now is still super clean.

Great video... thanks for posting. If I had to choose from that, I think I'd go with the CRC Corrosion Inhibitor: https://amzn.to/2ZONbwK -- if I could find a way to get under there and spray it. This does inform me, though, that if a dealer asks "do you want undercoating?" to ask "what kind of undercoating is it??" The rubberized stuff is cool and I've used it around the farm for some stuff, but I like how the CRC dries and doesn't gum up connectors, bolts, etc., but also doesn't pick up tons of dirt and isn't all oily or greasy -- and doesn't blast off with water.

How many cans of that do you think it would take? I wonder if it is possible to get it in a gallon jug?

Edit: I looked into the possibility of a gallon jug but it doesn't appear that it is available.

Yeah... I imagine it would take a half dozen cans to do it 'right'. The video maker suggested in a follow-up that the CRC product goes on thin. He also noted caveats of it not being 'self healing' (it doesn't flow), so missed spots or those that lose the coating might be susceptible. That said, blasting it with a pressure washer didn't remove it. He also noted that the main reason HE does not use it is because of one primary reason: he doesn't want the mess and overspray. I guess the 'orange' over-spray from the CRC and other cosmoline products gets all over everything. So maybe it's an application you would want to do outside, if possible... on a non-windy day. Makes me wonder how bad the overspray is that you might get it on your paint job. That NH oil has a new/follow-up product, too, that looks really promising and performed really well, but wasn't named in his video. https://nhoilundercoating.com/

We have been using CRC on the unseen areas of our Raptor and Yamahashield on the nicer seen portions like the front suspension areas for the past 2 winters.
The CRC is a dirt brown color where the Yamahshield is clear. Both spray thin out of the can. Happy with the results and need to re-coat every year. PB Blaster recently came out with Surface Shield. Results are supposed to be better than CRC. I did use it on our new snowblower, it’s not as clear as the Yamahashield but is thicker than including the CRC.
It does stay wet to the touch so I’m not sure if that’s good as it will attract dust, dirt, salt etc. I’ll have to see as I haven’t had to use the snowblower yet. We live in upstate NY and we have salt brine from November till March so we are always looking for what works.
Good luck and keep us posted on what your do.
Thanks!

Some of the things I considered before I choose a product; 1- is that you want something that's able to reach inside frame areas and crevices that are not easy to see, this is where salt will accumulate and more than likely the welds wont be coated, hard to do with spray cans, the shop I use has a long spray wand to reach inside the frame, products like Fluid Film and NHUO are designed to creep deep into cracks and crevices. 2- also I wanted products non petroleum base and does not have solvents, which can cause on the long run rubbers on seals to swell. 3-non hazardous to environment as I live next to the coast and non flammable. With that in mind I would use either Fluid Film or NHUO, and lastly ended choosing NHUO because I have a dealer close by and they can do a better job on a lift that I can using a couple of cans on my drive way.

Which product are you using on your Gladiator? I like the idea of an undercoating, but I'm always afraid I'll just be spraying my money away.

My Rubicon is 7 years old and isn't terrible underneath, but I also have taken it through the car wash almost every week since it was new.

I am using the clear undercarriage application from New Hampshire oil, supposed to be done every year but I am doing it every two, started applying right after I bought it new.

I have been using POR 15 on both my Broncos. Of course they don't look that bad.... even after 25 years. There is reason you never buy a vehicle (older than 6 years) that comes from any state North of Virginia..… unless you just enjoy drilling out broken bolts. A salt water mix will find any crack or microscopic opening … and start to work it's magic. You can slow the rot... but I don't believe anything can really prevent it.

Park it in the garage from October to March … or move to Arizona.

You would think after a 50 years we could develop a icy road treatment that doesn't absolutely destroy metal …… but then people wouldn't trade their cars in every few years..... and the economy would suffer.

I'm going to head back to Ziebart and let them take care of it when I get it. I've had good luck with them for the last 35-40 years. I get the paint and under done.
