Actual tire size when mounted mega thread

Wherever you go, there you are!

Years ago there was a thread on another forum, I think it was a Jeep forum, where people posted images of their true mounted tire size. This might be helpful information for those shopping for tires or at least be interesting information.

Most will know the advertised tire size is never what you end up with after they are mounted and inflated. For instance, most 315/70R17 (supposed 35's) will come in at about 33.5" after they are mounted, inflated and under the weight of the vehicle.

Please follow this guideline when posting so everything is as equal as it can get. Also have the tires inflated to what you'd run on the streets, not off-road.

  • Tire Make:
  • Tire Model:
  • Tire Size:
  • Advertised Diameter:
  • Wheel Size:
  • How many miles are on the tires:
  • Measure on flat surface from the ground to the top of the tire tread
  • Post an image showing the tape measure or just post the actual and true mounted size

I'll go 1st:

  • Tire Make: Toyo
  • Tire Model: Open Country A/T III
  • Tire Size: 285/75R17 (34's)
  • Advertised Diameter: 33.9"
  • Wheel Size: 17x8
  • About 4,000 miles on these
  • Actual Mounted Diameter: 33 1/8th

Interesting..

So if you slapped those on the same 17x8 wheel that I have, you'd gain a little more diameter but my 285/75R17's (34's) would still be very, very close to your 315/70R17's (35's).

BTW, Duratrac's are great tires! Had them on my old JK and loved them. Just wish they didn't say 'Wrangler' on them and I probably would have purchased them instead of the Toyos..

I have a set on my work F-250 and running my second set on my 67 Bronco. They were fantastic in Moab.

All, or at least most of the actual specs are on tire rack's site. I've been using it to research tires for years. :)

For example

Those are manufacturer claimed specs. The actual and true mounted size will always be less, much less in many cases. That's why I started this thread.

Most 315/70R17's, like the ones that come stock on the Sasquatch package, will range between 33" and 33.5" when mounted, aired and under vehicle load which is nowhere even close to a 35" or the manufacturers claim of 34.4".

For instance, look at @Sven measurement. The manufacturers claimed diameter for his 315/70R17 is 34.4" but in reality, it's a only a hair over 33" when mounted, aired and under the vehicle weight.

You can get a little closer to claimed size by ditching the metric. A 35x12.50R17 will be closer to a 35" than a 315/70R17 will be. I'd guess most 35x??.??R17's would come in about 34.1" or so when mounted, aired and under vehicle weight.

Lack of participation won't stop me from cataloging true tire sizes! LOL.. I'll hit a few Ford Dealerships and measure every different tire size they have on the lot next time I am bored.. 😂

Do Bronco owners not care about these things? Last time I saw a thread like this, several years ago, it was like 17 pages long.

Here are some 35" tires that I had installed today.

  • Tire Make: Falken
  • Tire Model: Wildpeak A/T4W
  • Tire Size: 35x11.5R17
  • Advertised Diameter: 35"
  • Wheel Size: 17x8
  • About 20 miles on these
  • Actual Mounted Diameter: 34 1/4
