2.3L Ford Performance Tune

I’d highly recommend doing this load yourself and saving $$$. The extra warranty coverage is based on 3/36k from initial purchase date. Since you are lifted you look like you really don’t care about warranties.
It’s super easy to do and you also have the Ford Performance files on your computer not the dealers computer.

I don’t have a windows machine and it’s only $100 for them to do it. If I end up getting it, I’ll just have them do it and save myself the hassle..

I also read they can charge the tire size when flashing g it so that will be nice..

Just to update this a little. The performance gains are very noticeable on the 2.3L.

I feel the torque and turbo boost the most. The turbo boost goes from something like 16 (stock) to the mid 20's with the tune. That's quite the boost increase and it's very noticeable. Throttle response is also very noticeable..

Ford Performance told me when I spoke with them on the phone that I can run 87 octane but I would not get any of the performance increases when doing so. He said it will not hurt the Bronco at all to run the 87. He said 91 would be optimal and I can run 93 if I wanted but the difference between 91 and 93 octane would be minimal.

This matters to me because I often travel to remote areas where most of the small gas stations will only have 87..

Updating the tire size in the ProCal 4 needs RPM (revelations per mile). I googled my tire and size and AI said the RPM was 604. I plugged that into the ProCal 4 but it was now off about 3mph in the opposite direction. After plugging in different # I came to 630, which was the sweet spot and my speedo is now spot on..

My MPG has also improved, or has it. I am getting about 1.5 more MPG on the Bronco display but that could just be a result of the correct tire size now being recognized by the Bronco. Before the flash, my speedo was about 5 mph off at 70 MPH. For instance, if the Bronco said I was doing 70, I'd actually be doing 75...

During my research for the tune, I noticed a lot of recommendations to upgrade the factory diverter valve because it's plastic and might not be able to handle the additional boost from the turbo over the long term.

Most recommended a Turbosmart Kompact EM VR19 Dual Port Blow Off Valve because it's a billet construction. I ordered it at the same time I ordered the tune and it says it should be here today. It says Ranger Raptor but it's also for the Bronco.

It also gives off a 'woosh' turbo sound when it vents for those who like that. I personally don't care about the 'woosh' and simply purchased to replace the plastic factory diverter valve due to the additional boost from the tune.

I'll update more after some time with the tune. I am really interested to see how the extra torque performs on the trails..

Adding a bit more information re: running 87 octane.

I won't do it often but like I said, a lot of the remote area small town gas stations might only have 87 octane. I'd prefer to avoid running the 87 so.........

Research led to me see that most of the mainstream octane boosters are garbage and you need like 500 bottles of the stuff to reach 91 from 87 for one fill up (yes, I exaggerated the #'s a bit)

I found this stuff, professional grade and the reviews are almost all glowingly positive. They have an app and online web portal where you can use their calculator to determine how much of the stuff to dump into your gas tank..

For me, it says to go from 87 to 93 with 13 gallons of gas I'd need 5.6 ounces of the stuff.. It comes in a 32 ounce can so I could get about 6 tank fill ups if I added 13 gallons of fuel at each fill up.

I have a 2dr so 13 gallons is about right for me as I'd rarely ever roll into a gas station sucking on fumes. If I did, I could use their phone app to calculate the additional amount needed based on the number of gallons of gas added.

With that in mind, the price is more reasonable considering I would only use it on my remote off-road and camping trips. Basically, one 32 ounce can of the stuff would easily last me the entire trip.. It would stretch even further if I only wanted to go from 87 to 91..

Anyways, I am adding all this info for the lone person, who may in the future, stumble across this thread and is clueless about it all like I am/was..

How do you tell if you are successfully flashed you ask? Well here you go!



You can see for the SW line mine says: SW: PB3A-FPB23A-HD.

Prior to the successful flash, mine had CA (or something like that) listed instead of the FP..

If FP is not listed in that 2nd section of the SW line then you are not tuned..

Gas is the downside, but the octane booster info you put above is helpful for those that can't find 91 or 93. I also assumed 87 was bad with the tune instead of not beneficial, so thanks for that fact!

That's what Dan at Ford Performance told me.. 87 is not preferred with a tune but it can be ran. You just won't get any of the tune benefits. He also said he would only run 87 sparingly and not all the time.

I'll avoid that situation altogether. I have plenty of 91 stations close by and when I go out on a camping and wheeling trip, I pack a bottle of the Boostane and call it good. Yeah a bottle of the 32oz is $32 but it's not something I'd need to use all the time...
