We just picked up a 1996 Bronco but it did not come with manuals. Ford had the manuals on line for download for free. While going through it we noticed that it mentioned the 4 wheel drive system. The interior has the 4x4 switch on the dash and the 4x4 low switch, but we also noticed the truck has manual locking hubs. The question is...does the truck come with both or has the front axle been replaced with the wrong one?

Keep the manual locking hubs , the autos in 96 just plain sucked.

It should've come with the auto locking hubs. As stated by @J.bell though, those auto lockers sucked! I went through a set on my 94 and could never find auto lockers online so just swapped for manual locking hubs.
