2.3L Oil Change Tip

There are many videos from vendors and others on the oil change process. I will try not to rehash any of that, but I did learn something changing oil on 2.3L Badlands.

It does seem little tricky to get to the oil filter. Picked up a filter socket for $7 and can easily access through the wheel well! And whoever invented the filter drain “chute” deserves a Grand Award!

Here’s my wrench setup.

Put the socket (76mm, 14 flute) and U-joint on first then attach the extension and ratchet. Place your drain at the end of the chute and loosen the filter a couple turns until oil starts flowing. Then just wait until it stops to remove the filter (I went back under the car for this). Didn’t spill a drop of oil!

Awesome information.
Didn’t spill a drop, I don’t think you did it right. If I don’t spill at least half a quart of oil something is wrong. Thankfully I always have lots of card board to catch it.

Oil filter removal was CLEAN! However, the exorcist style projectile spewing of oil from the drain plug was a different story! Gotta put the drain pan just aft of the passenger front tire..

Good question. Local Oreilly shop. Fits the M1-102A that I use and the OE motorcraft. I edited OP to include photo…

Could I ask how long your extension is?

I’m guess 8-10”.

Oil change when well this weekend. the video I saw on line said I should be able to loosen the filter from the top, um no. Your method from the side was amazing, snuck right in there and made it happen . The flat (I know that is not technical) was a little tricky to get around but once I figured that out it went very well. The little truffe for the filter oil to drain out of is very nice. Hard to get all the oil out of it thought, kind of freaked me out as I thought I might have a leak, just old oil.

I think it’s pretty much impossible to “not spill a drop."
Oil drips out the little Oil Flume for many hours afterwards.
Next time I do it, I’m going to leave a piece of cardboard under the end of the chute for a day or so.

I usually use some brake cleaner to clean up anything with residual oil on it. Prevents those drips for days...

That's exactly what I did. Then threw some compressed air at it for good measure.
