About the event

A fast paced trip through the Arizona Strip to explore an abandoned mine and watch the sunset on the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Event details

Before you sign up for this run you need to answer YES to ALL the questions.

Will you be driving a Bronco?
Would you like to park on the rim of the Grand Canyon in your Bronco?
Can you be bathroom self-sufficient all day on the trails?
Are you able to drive quickly over washboard roads? 25-33 MPH?
Can you quickly and safely traverse trails with a difficulty rating of 5 or higher?
Are you able to spend all day and 220 miles off grid in the desert/rock/sandy trails?
And now the easiest one, can you feed yourself out of your Bronco for the whole day without a restaurant or store.

If you passed that test here are some details about the day.
Starting early morning, we will meet just off of HWY 7 outside of St. George / Hurricane Utah. We will be driving around 78 miles on gravel and sand road/trails before hitting Parashant Canyon and the Copper Mountain Mine - Andrus Canyon trail.

This trial will be at a slower pace, but we will need to keep moving. The clock, weather and trail conditions will determine if we make it to the mine before heading to the overlook.
The road to the trailhead/overlook does not look like anything we will need four wheel drive for. At the overlook we will be spending a fair amount of time, hopefully. I would love enough time to get individual pictures at the rim and a few group pictures as well as cook my dinner, all while watching the sunset.
The way out looks to be just a long dirt road that should be very easy to traverse in the dark.

GMRS/FRS Channel 22 462.72500 is the primary channel
GMRS/FRS Channel 15 462.55000 is the secondary channel just in case there is interference.
220 Miles mostly on sand/dirt with 40 miles on slower trail.
Bathrooms are very very rare out here.
Rain may stop us in our tracks.

If you are a Geocacher like I am, there is a virtual geocache at the mine location. If you are not or have never heard of geocaching just respond to this post and ask. I'll share some places to get information on Geocaching.

Good morning, it is going to be a long day in the desert, so start time is meeting at 7am where the dirt starts. We need tobe rolling by 7:30 so we have time to make it to the mine.

Put these coordinates into Google Maps and it will take you directly there.

So just a few reminders for this upcoming trip.

1. Please download the route information. This is so important that you know the route just in case you get separated. It shouldn't happen but this is a large area of nothing. Google maps will not work so please be prepared.

2. If you continue to the rim after the mine, you will need to register in the morning because we will be getting back late.

3. GAS please make sure you have enough fuel for 220 miles in the desert and about 30 or so of those miles is on a tougher slow trail. A stock 4dr should be fine but my 2dr I'm bringing extra to be safe.

4. No cell service, no help. We are on our own. If you want to head back to registration instead of watching the sunset at the rim, I suggest going with others and not being alone.

5. Food make sure you have what you need.

Finally we will be moving at a quicker pace than you maybe used to. Please keep a safe distance behind the Bronco in front of you not only for stopping but also for obstacle avoidance. We have a lot of ground to cover so let's get it done safely.
