About the event

Time for us Northerners to get some dirt time in! Ok, everyone's welcome, of course, but this run is going to be near Santa Clarita.

Event details

Time to get out on the trails around Santa Clarita again. This time it will be a short run which will end at the famous Rock Inn where we can have lunch and some beverages. The first 1/2 of this run will be on a trail we haven't done before called Elizabeth Tunnel/South Portal. This is a short easy bordering on moderate (level 4) trail. Once complete we will ling up with Lake Huges Truck Trail (easy level 3) and head down into Lake Huges and the Rock Inn. "This trail is historic in nature as the south portal of the Los Angeles Aqueduct's Elizabeth Tunnel is sealed, but clearly visible from the south end of the trail. From the north end of the trail, views of the Tejon Ranch and the Tehachapi Mountains are visible. Access to the Pacific Crest Trail (hiking only) is easy as the intersection with the USFS roads is right there."

The trailhead where we will meet is located here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ag5h8ZTzwwAGjEU68

As usual, please fill out the emergency contact form which you can fine here: https://forms.gle/UpRAg4dHMdsRtJZw8

I'm going to pre-run this, so more details to come on where we will stage, etc. Also, based on my pre-run I might have to make some other changes, so stay tuned.

Sounds great, thanks for putting this run together!

Any idea if skid plates are required for the Elizabeth Tunnel section?

I’ll make sure to fill out the Emergency Contacts form this weekend

I don’t think so. That first section gets the rating it does because of some ruts. I haven’t pre-run it yet, but if when I do I find anything you should know about I’ll let you know. Which trim level do you have?

2023 Wildtrak. It has the front steel bash plate but no belly skids. Skids are on the upgrade list but haven’t gotten around to it yet

I've added the skids to my Badlands, and I used them a lot in Moab. You'll be more than fine on this run with the WildTrak.

Folks,

I've been down with COVID, so I haven't had a chance to pre-run this yet. My plan is to pre-run the route the weekend before. However, I did create a Google Maps pin for trailhead here we will be meeting. https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ag5h8ZTzwwAGjEU68

I suggest using Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps to get you to the trailhead, and then you can use your favorite offroad mapping software (shameless plug for OnX goes here) after that. Note that cell service can be sketchy at best, so don't forget to download your maps before you leave home.

A little confused as to the started/ meetup point is. Is it the pin on google maps or is it the Quail lake parking lot on the Gps download you provided?

It’s the pin in Google Maps. Quail Lake was last time so you may have the wrong trail map. Here’s a link to the right one. https://webmap.onxmaps.com/offroad/share/content?share_id=01J39MC4PZ7MD3Q60273QD6AN5

Got It thank you!

... AND the link to the .GPX file that is in the confirmation email is definitely wrong. It's for a previous run we did to The Ridge Route. Here's a link to the correct .gpx file. Please let me know if that doesn't work for anyone.

I also corrected the email, so if you got your confirmation email after about 10AM yesterday the link is now correct.

Hi Joerge. I'm looking forward to it.

Interesting thing I noticed with OnX. If you are viewing a shared map while on the trail and OnX crashes for whatever reason, you won't be able to bring it back up if you don't have cell reception. This happened a few times to me while at Big Bear Bronco bash. This isn't an issue if you've uploaded the gpx file for the planned run on your OnX account. It only happens with shared maps as they require internet access to load.

You're right, that's because if you use them as just a shared link they never get saved to your phone, and hence you can't use them offline. I'll check and see if you can save the contents of the shared link.

OK, I thought about this and I think that the answer is to use the following steps:

  1. While online, click on the link. You only need to do this once, and OnX should now create a new folder in My Contents that has the route, waypoints, etc. all in it. From that time forward, you can just go to My Contents and you should see that folder.
  2. Go to the newly created folder on your phone, and click on it so you get that route, waypoints, etc displayed. I usually use the "only show this folder on the map" button to get all the other noise out of the way.
  3. Make sure that the entire route is displaying on the screen.
  4. Click on offline maps
  5. Then New Map
  6. Pick the map detail that will cover the entire run.
  7. Name it and maybe add a note to indicate what it is.
  8. Click save.

You will now have an offline map of the area for the route.

Keep in mind that offline maps are of an entire area and can be used with any route that's been set up within that area not just that route. Personally, I just create offline maps of the whole area(s) that I'm going to do runs in ahead of time. For example, I have offline maps of the entire Big Bear area and the mountain down both sides, Pioneer town, etc. all set up before I head out to Bash (and any other run in that area). I now have a LOT of So Cal available in my off line maps so all I have to do is make sure it's loaded on my phone before I leave, and I'm all set.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions about OnX. I'm a TrailGuide so I am pretty familiar with the app and I have access to folks at OnX that most don't in case there's something I don't know.

BTW, for those that haven't been to the Rock Inn, this is an iconic bar/restaurant in Lake Huges. It was originally constructed in 1929. If you want to see the menu, etc. you can find it on their website. https://www.historicrockinn.com/
