The 4th of July not only is our nation's birthday but it is also my birthday. To celebrate I am hosting a Bronco cruise in a parade, on some easy forest service trails, a slightly tough climb up Potato Hill, huckleberry ice cream (also pies, shakes and ice cream Sandwiches) and finishing the day off with a big firework display in the Lewiston- Clarkston valley. I will be doing an all day affair but you can leave or join as your schedule allows. The scheduled meeting time is 9am to get ready for the parade and get in position. The parade starts at 10am. After that there is no set times except for fireworks at 10pm. This means we are at our own pace and if we want to take longer at a location we have time to do that. The plan for lunch is to eat around 12-1 ish so pack a lunch because we will be eating on the trail somewhere.
The Johnson parade is the most All American parade I have ever attended and been a part of. It is in a small community just south of Pullman Washington. The parade is not organized by anyone really it just happens, every year like clockwork on the 4th of July. Here is an article about the parade.

Potato Hill or Spud hill as the locals call it, is just a tall hill with great views of the area around it. The drive up is a bit rutted and muddy at times, but the last climb before the top is very steep with very loose rocks. I can climb it in my work truck with open diffs but I need some momentum and there is a bit of wheel spin on the large sharp rocks. So if you are not confident there is a place to park and walk up the last little bit. But the views up top are great and an amazing photo op.
Huckleberry ice cream, shackles, pies and cookie sandwiches are the best you will find. The Elk River Lodge and General store is famous for their Huckleberry Ice Cream. The berries are hand picked by the locals during the season and then frozen to be used all year. You will not regret doubling up on insulin for this treat.
Lewiston and Clarkston Fireworks are a great way to end the day. The fireworks are fired off from the Baseball field at Clarkston High School. The fireworks can be seen all over the valley and last a good 15 to 20 minutes depending upon the year.
