I miss the IH Scout 80. Best summer job of my life, mineral research outfit, Sonora Desert. We left Tucson for the field at 3:00 or 4:00 AM, researched with electronic and collected mineral samples until about Noon, called it a day

So is the rig you reserved a hybrid or a plug in hybrid (PHEV)…

I’m going to hold out for a Bronco hybrid, which means my first might be a Bronco Sport (since Maverick and Escape have same platform)….

Ordered and waiting for a 2025 Maverick hybrid… production week slated for 12/9/24…

Nope. Doesn't really look like a scout to me. Also starting at 60k can't afford that and it'll probably be higher at launch. The inside doesn't shout rugged offroader to me but that is all cgi concept so who knows.

They don’t offer a PHEV option - it’s EREV (Extended Range) so there is an onboard gas motor that charges the battery to extend the range. Additionally, the SUV touts 7,000 lb tow capacity (10K for the pick up) & 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

I didn’t know anyone was doing that configuration, but always wondered why not (thinking diesel locomotives)…

It's definitely not very common. I know BMW was selling the I3 with a battery extender. It was a 2 cylinder motor running a generator. I looked and it appears they don't sell that model any longer.

It does not..

If companies are going to bring back iconic names, at least try and make it resemble the OG version.. Ford did a great job of this with the 1G --> 6G Bronco.

This new Scout? It is not even remotely close to the original Scout.. Massive swing and miss in my book..

For the folks saying "it's doesn't look like an original Scout 80 truck or SUV... do yall want the original 93 hp version as well? And 3000 lb max towing capacity? The New one has an ESTIMATED 10,000lb tow rating (again that's estimated) and probably for like 75 miles before needing charged.. haha

And taking their word for it, it "sounds" like it has the bones underneath and running gears to get you off road... PLUS IT HAS THAT MUST HAVE STAYBAR DISCONNECT... Thank goodness..😉

Ford give the Bronco 3500lb And most complain.. what gives. If they built an original Scout SUV or 80.. identical body and chassis, people would still complain.

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger will be a EREV as well.

I leased a few of the i3 Rex for my business a few years back - they were terrific little vehicles for urban commuting. They have been replaced with a pair of Escape PHEV & a few Bronco Sports.

I personally love the design. It looks a heck of a lot better than the Rivian. It seems they have really put some thought in the features and love the idea of the range extender. The cost is much cheaper than I would have anticipated but you never know what options are going to cost and what the actual price will be by the time they roll it out.

Also, is Volkswagen involved with this? In the video they welcomed a couple of VW execs but never really mentioned how they are involved.

The last thing I need is another vehicle at this point in life. That being said, this one is interesting on a number of fronts. I really like the idea of fully EV with an onboard gas generator… that would certainly solve time issues with waiting for a charge on long trips… top off the gas generator and off you go…

Not a fan of the bench seat up front, but otherwise I like the faux wood trim in the interior…

Who is building this new Scout and Terra?
From ChatGPT
Volkswagen Group is reviving the iconic Scout brand as an all-electric SUV and truck line through its subsidiary, Scout Motors. Production will take place in a new factory currently under construction in Blythewood, South Carolina, a $2 billion project that will span 1,100 acres. Once operational by late 2026, the facility aims to produce around 200,000 vehicles annually, focusing on rugged off-road capabilities reminiscent of the original Scout but updated with modern electric technology.

The Scout revival is targeting adventure and off-road enthusiasts with design and engineering meant to compete in the U.S. market against vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Scout Motors has emphasized that the new models will offer both durability and customization options, aligning with Scout’s historical reputation for utility and adaptability.

UPDATE: heck, I might give ‘em $100 just to get the updates and the swag they might send… looks like late 2026 for plant completion… the pickup intrigues me ALOT

Should have done a little more searching. Looks like Rivian and VW are involved.

Terrible argument..

They could still have made it worthy of the Scout badge and added modern features and functions.

This should not be called a Scout and they should have given it a different name as nothing about this design resembles the OG Scout..

To each their own but there is zero chance I’d consider buying this.. IMO they’ve butchered the Scout name.

Wait... we can't have it both ways, old looks and luxury creature comforts... we could argue that Ford missed it as well by adding the four door... But here we were, rushing to get one to put in the driveway. Or I was, atleast.

While it may not look like you think it should, or I think it should. Doesn't mean it's wrong. Buyers and the economy determine what's a homerun and whats a strike. It being EV will definitely hurt it. But put a gas burner under the hood. And I think it would sell quite nice and comparable to other new vehicles in it's day.

And as far as the Scout name, the early founders dropped the ball first..... It's been 44 yrs... if those were such great driving, dependable, great looking rides... why? Buyers? Economy? I don't know..

Ford also made the 2dr Bronco which def resembles a modern look of the OG 1st Gen. The 4dr version is a sign of the times and competition. Can't blame Ford for that and the 4dr still resembles an OG Bronco, looks and design wise. Yes the 2dr is a closer representation, but the 4dr is close..

Next, it looks nothing like an OG Scout. It's not even close! Don't get me wrong, it's a cool vehicle but it should have never been named the Scout, as it's not even close to a Scout..

I'd argue they could have kept the design as close to an OG Scout as possible while still adding modern day motors and amenities. They didn't even try..

Why is it even call it a Scout?

The current Bronco is the sixth iteration (generation) and one could easily say Gen 5 looks nothing like Gen 1

Model names have been applied to different vehicles throughout auto-making times… look at how many different looking vehicles carry the name Mustang…

The way I think of it, rather than getting hung up on the aesthetic similarities or differences, is “does this new vehicle try to meet the “idea” of the original… Doing so keeps me from spending too much time in the nostalgic weeds…

It's all about money. The sooner everyone figures this out, the better. Every seat needs a butt. And car manufacturers want your butt in their seat... and Scout built a vehicle to compete in not only in the Off-road class, but the EV class.. they get folks from both sides... whether you or I like it or not. They don't care as long as they can push more that 150k vehicles in 4-6 year period.

So do think the 7th gen Bronco should resemble the 2nd gen Bronco? For sake of conversation.... they can't forever sorta look like a 1st gen....
