yes, I know it'll be hot. But we are looking forward to our weekend get away. I got the "get ready" email with suggestions of what to bring. It actually says long pants and long sleeve shirt. I get it for protection from brush/sticks/bugs/sun but I'll overheat? hydrate.

But, my question is after the day is done. Is anybody tipping the guides? just curious if I need to prepare for that. Thanks in advance.

Our guide wouldn't take a tip. At both Moab and our Vegas half day.
As a native Arizonan were it's kinda warm and the sun is bright, light cotton long sleeve and long pants will keep you cooler. Exposed skin in the desert sun will heat you up and dehydrate you quickly.
Between the sun, cactus, vegetation and critters, I would never go into the desert in shorts and short sleeves.
Wide brim hat too.
Drink lots of water and no energy drinks.

I see you are coming from Michigan. When we have traveled east in the summer the heat and humidity were just plain miserable.
Out here it's a different kind of heat.
A few more tips if I may.
Clothes light in color. Tan or white are best. Leave the black shirts behind.
Avoid a ball cap with a metal button on top because if your thin on hair it can burn you.
A wide brim hat to protect your neck. If you're thin on top, not the mesh kind, you don't want sun on your head. Dizzy is a sign of heat stress.
A cool neck wrap.
A quick way to cool off is cool water on the inside of your wrist or neck, were the major arteries are close to the surface. These are also the places you protect from sun.

Unlike the humid places, not sweating in the desert is a bad thing, a sign of heat stress. So is urine oder and color. Not urinating means your not drinking enough. All signs of dehydration.
Don't wait to drink water. Waiting can make you chug it, that can make bad things happen.

The desert is a beautiful place and the Vegas off rodeo is in a very nice place. If you go prepared, your going to have a blast and you won't be thinking about the heat. Hope this helps.

All good points. We rolled by the Vegas BOR, to take some pictures last week and it was 108 in Las Vegas but only 91 at the BOR site. But it is still hot and dry. Use the ac in your rig and every time you stop take a drink. Those cooling rags work well. We keep them in the ice chest.

thanks everybody for the tips---get it? tips?

Yeah, I figured I would wear a long sleeve sunshirt and lightweight hiking pants and a brim hat. I can douse the hat in water a few times during the day. I assume there will be chances for water refills through out the day? I'll bring more water than I think I will need. I hope to have some good pics/vids when we come back.

They will take good care of you and have plenty of water. Your going to have a blast.

Light weight hiking pants can work. Some use polyester and you do not want that. I don't know about a sun shirt.
I've tried so called moisture wicking and different products. I've come to the conclusion, if it's not cotton and loose fitting I pass.

I attended the Raptor Off-Roadeo on 6/22 and had a blast. They provide water & snacks and while inside the Bronco the AC is pumping and it’s comfortable but when you step outside - BE PREPARED! It’s hot as balls in Vegas so follow the advice re clothing.

To answer your question about gratuities, I had a blast & gave the guide $100 at the end of the day and it was not only well earned but absolutely appreciated.

We went to the Nevada Off-Rodeo and followed the advice which left us over dressed. My son got heat stroke but that was on him for not drinking enough water. I wore long pants long sleeve shirt and boots. Shorts a tee and some good shoes would have been fine. You're In a Bronco driving. There were lessons before in a non rough area and q&a at the end in a shaded sitting area. We got out a couple times for views and quizes but we weren't exactly hiking nor wandering in the desert. I like the heat so I was fine. I would judge on what you're comfortable with in a hot desert like area. Closed shoes for sure though.
