Tailgate Louvers/Vents

Did Ford solve the issue of being able to drive at high speed with just the rear windows down? You know.....that ear piercing sound that’s made when only the rear windows are down and you are driving 55mpg plus.

If you look at this photo, you can see louvers/vents on the tailgate. Not sure if this was Fords purpose, but I think it would allow the air to escape so you can drive with just a rear window down.

I can’t tell if they vent to the outside or not. What do you think?

Possibly. I haven’t noticed it before or at least didn’t pay any attention to it. It must serve some purpose.

*Up. Unless I'm missing the secret compartment where the window rolls down.

It's probably to vent cabin pressure. Wrangler has it too.

likely to help regulate the air pressure, I am sure most vehicles have something similar.

Good catch. I can tell you the Jeep doesn't have that. I do have the plastic strip on top and imagine (as suggested earlier) it's for wiring access. But the louvres are a cool add because it is like dragging a parachute when you open the windows on the 4 door.

My Passat and our Arcadia make the noise. I don’t see an exit out for the vents in the pic I posted. It could be on the bottom, but I can’t see it.

I had a 1998 Expedition and the back windows pivoted out slightly to prevent the noise from the back windows being down.
