Not very many roof top tents that weigh 110Lbs.
Can the rack be beefed up?

The rack system can handle 450lbs
110lbs is the dynamic limit
I'm going with the new GFC tent. 80lbs

I'll have to take a look at that one. Maybe they will offer that in the accessories catalog.

It looks like you might be able to add a 3rd support. The hard top looks like it can have 2 attachment points per side over the rear shell. So if there was a rack that takes advantage of the extra support over the rear shell we could possibly 20200816_171559.jpgsee a stronger supported version. The other rails we see have a much larger span and just by adding another support like pictured could help that weight load.
Wildtrak, 4DR, Iconic Silver, High, Camo Seats.

If yakima owned a shuttle craft.... dollars to donuts they would design it a roof rack to withstand the rigors of space travel for a space jack and jerry can at the least...
the real question is ..
....can the “roof“ be beefed up... aftermarket companies thrive on taking the unfeasible to infeasible to possible....

Could this be an early Yakima prototype photo on a 1921 oldsmobile custom?

btw.... in regards to accessory listing, it would prove advantageous if Ford includes each item’s weight for Total load calcs not only for roof placement, but total vehicle travel load as well.

That is a good point total weight of all components is very important I just hope that any aftermarket doesn't come up with an exoskeleton roof rack I really don't like the look of those.

windshield pillars are stout by safety stds, rack contact looks close enough to pillars on ledge beam to minimize deflection.... I suspect the rear clam shell the weak link to the listed dynamic load of 110 # (probablly 80% of actual for safety)..... to produce a rear clam structure within reasonable weight Increase would be pricey.... heck just give the contract to a us made cooler co...buffalo, cordova, rtic; yeti.... all we need is a 150 #rated shell ( if that is in fact the weak link) for rrt.... insulated to boot!

btw- good thread you started Mike... worthy to have an administrator move it out of“ use users start here“ for optimum discussion.

Looks good!

I saw that design, I don't know it's not very big. I like the ikamper right now hard top and opens sideways for the extra space. But it's too heavy for the rack they have now. Unless there is a heavy duty rack that comes out.

I‘d have to break out one of my blow up sumo suit ( as fall protection) ... to include on the trip packing list to sleep in with that sized tent!
My lovely wife and I are decades beyond the romantic stage- which such a sized tent affords and intimately invites.... currently, I would surely be pushed out of that size tent by her in a sleep state...

Agreed... the x-cover looks best for weight/ room ratio ( 130#; with the ability to set the kids up in a lower annex ( addition)).

Hopefully something like a Maximus-3 style rack is designed that bolts through the hardtop into the roll cage.

I used one of those iKamper tents in a rental before and they are SUPER comfortable and very spacious. But, like you said, they are just too heavy for this roof’s capacity. I imagine someone will come out with an exoskeleton-style rack that will carry more weight, but those are ugly.

I agree exoskeletons, not for me.

I don't know why you put a tent up there, gonna be murder when nature calls at 1 am getting down and will terribly inconvenience the bear to have to climb up there to eat you. :p
