My Jeep has the Pentastar v6 that they are still using. Not a bad engine at all and has put out plenty of torque to get me over obstacles and through trails. But... It really doesn't want to get to far over 85mph on the highway with those 35" tires and it really doesn't love high altitude. One of the benefits of the Bronco is the forced aspiration, but I'd love to squeeze out a few more lbs of torque (and couple extra hp wouldn't hurt). Luckily, since this motor is on the F150, there has been some stuff done in the market.

Any performance mods you guys have planned right away?

Until the warranty is out, I probably won't be doing any engine mods. I'm hoping Ford Performance offers a tune for the 2.7, so the warranty will still be valid.

Depend on what we can change.Have to see what Ford Performance offers. They offer a Ranger calibration kit for the 2.3 that is 50 state legal.

TBH I was perfectly happy with the 2.7 in my F-150. Enough tourqe to plant you in the seat. Even when cruising at 65-70. I feel zero need to do anything to my 2.7 Bronco when I get it. It will put a smile on my face every time I put the pedal to the floor.

But there will always be those who want more.

I don’t think I will mess with the engine too much. Well at least not do things to void the warranty. With all the electronics in vehicles this day in age you really don’t want to void that warranty.

I have read that the Bronco will be getting a new ECU that allows for over the air updates. The security involved in such a endeavor will make it extremely hard to unlock for tuning ourselves, but as we have seen, the aftermarket always get them unlocked. Ford did mention that they would be working with SEMA to find a few companies to offer tuning within that platform. Bad news for me, as I am a tuner and was looking forward to turning it up once it was in my hands!

Well, if you figure anything out with tuning the 2.7, I will have to keep in touch! I plan on modding the engines as soon as things become available. I did it with my Mustang, and had zero issues during my warranty period.

I am getting the 2.7 as well. Keep me posted on what mods you do that won’t void the warranty on the engine!

Like @TCopp said, keep us posted as you learn how it'll work and what you can do. Based on Ford's track record and their embracing/support of the Bronco's-are-meant-to-be-made-your-own philosophy, I'm hoping they find a way to let modders and tuners do their thing while still allowing customers to get the benefit of over-the-air factory updates. I'm encouraged by what people are able to do with the 2.7 in the F150 and the mods we see on the Ranger.

If you do the Performance Tune through Ford Performance (and it is installed by a Ford Dealership) your warranty is good. Not as cheap as doing it yourself/aftermarket, obviously.

Do they offer one for the 2.7? I know they do for the 2.3 in the Ranger.

Not yet. They said they will be offering one. (Per Ford Perfomance Rep at Ford Nationals). The one for the Ranger is 50 state legal too, so I would expect the same.

Great. I was hoping they were going to do one at some point. Thanks for the info.

Ford was pretty great with mods and tunes on my 2005 Mustang - didn't void the warranty. Jeep is obviously really good about mods and such, since very few Jeeps run all factory parts for very long. It will be interesting to see how Ford intends to deal with warranty and service on the Bronco.

I think it is very much dealer dependent whether they cover any warranty work when tunes are involved. I've heard plenty of horror stories about Ford rejecting drivetrain warranties when tunes are involved.
I haven't driven the 2.7 so I don't even know if I will want to tune it or not. I just returned an Explorer Sport on lease with the 3.5 and it had a good kick in the pants feeling when you got on it. Expecting similar with the 2.7.

i think we can expect Ford Performance to offer packages similar to the Ranger. Their engine tune is $825 plus Dealer install and maintains the 3/36K warranty.

https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-9603-REB
"Comes with Ford Performance 3yr/36k mile warranty from new vehicle in-service when installed by a Ford dealer or ASE/Red Seal certified technician"

The 4 cyl adds:
  • Improved drive-ability and throttle response throughout RPM range
  • Optimized shift schedule
  • Horsepower gain: 45 HP @ 4,500 RPM
  • Torque gain: 60 lb/ft @ 2,500 RPM
But requires you burn 91 Octane.

I am getting the 6-cyl and will probably leave it alone, even when the tune comes out unless I see a power issue.
