TechCrunch is reporting that GM is doubling down on efforts to market the upcoming Hummer EV as its off-road competitor to the Bronco as well as an answer to Tesla's Cybertruck. This sounds like it could be trying to be too much to everyone and risks possibly falling short. Read the original article here...

I'm excited to see the Hummer come back and what it's capabilities are...especially in EV form. However, I doubt it will have a removable roof and doors. With that, I'm out...I need fresh air!

It's promising something "like" that, but they haven't given any real details. The original Hummers were never really very capable as off-road vehicles (except for the original 65mph "limited" mil-spec variants). They were too big, too boxy, too heavy, poor turning radius, etc. They were highway tanks. Hopefully this one delivers on GM's promises, but we'll see. They blew their chance to do something great with the Blazer, so I'm skeptical. But honestly, competition is good for everyone.

Saw the reveal video. Looks rushed (to complete with both Bronco and Tesla). 11,500 ft lbs of torque and 0-60 in 3 seconds. The roof is designed now to actually come off ...but its removable in four sections. I’m shocked.

It all sounds like a lot of promise with no real meat. The 0-60 time doesn't surprise me, because that's achievable relatively easily with an EV. Same for the torque promise. The challenge GM is going to face is combining the EV truck platform into a truly capable off-road vehicle that doesn't present massive dangers for the driver. Not to mention that they're still going to have to solve the battery problem that is only exaggerated in off-road conditions. I have to think that specialty "modes" like the crawl features will consume power at a higher rate. What happens when the truck runs out of juice on the trail? Will they have solar chargers to power it up by letting it sit for a week or two?

I hope they work all of this out. But, it seems like GM is in a panic reaction to the EV challengers that Ford is bringing with the Mach-E and the upcoming F-150ev. Now, they're also realizing the mistakes of their Blazer fiasco. They're trying to answer all of the challenges with a single solution, and I'm just not sure it's going to work. But, time will tell. (I just doubt it will be happening in 2021 like they're promising.)

I know it's an EV but that torque though... Yes, shocked if it has a removable roof.

Instant torque is really the biggest benefit of the EVs. Tesla's Cybertruck is reported to weigh in with 800 eHP and 1000 ft lbs of torque. Ford hasn't given specs for its electric F-150, but they have released a video of the truck towing a fully loaded railcar (full of F-150s) weighing a whopping 1.25 MILLION lbs. The F-150e pulled that sucker easily for 1000 ft or more. As these EVs grow and mature, they will be beasts for hauling. The biggest hurdle to overcome remains the battery issue. They've got to store more capacity and continue to recharge faster in order to become viable replacements for the gasoline/Diesel engines. That said... it's happening, and it's happening rapidly. I've said before on these forums that I honestly believe that by 2030, the electric vehicle will be standard for all new car sales.

I'm seriously thinking about holding off on my Bronco just to see what else comes out in the next year. We've got the Hummer EV and possibly the Bronco EV already... I'd love an EV with all the power and torque, and never having to fill up with gas again.

I would like to have an EV, but I’m not a fan of the premium attached to the price tag right now.

Don’t cancel!!!

Definitely am not cancelling yet. Hoping for more info before I have to commit, though.

Agreed. The battery density isn't really the issue, they can haul gobs of weight, so just stuff as many cells as you can in there. It's the charge, cycle and bleed times. But they are proving that simple conditioning (heating the batteries to charge and cooling when using) can be game changers. It's moving fast. But likely not quite there for the wheeling I want to do yet. But I'll line up when it is.
