Hi Everyone,

Happy to say installed my winch. Tough at times but worth it.

RC high winch mount, MetalTech 4 x 4 Total Front Frame Reinfocement (TFFR),m M2M camera relocate kit, Warn Zeon XD 12s, Factor 55 Ultrahook and rope protector

Two men sixteen hours to install with some extras like painting and camera relocation. One day six hours and the next day 10 hours with basically no breaks.

The hardest part was the MetalTech's TFFR. Someone on here mentioned with another install they don't show you how it's done because it is a hard install and you may not want to do it after watching an install video. We found this install difficult. I asked Metaltech if there was anything different on the Raptor and they said there shouldn't be and sent me a video of them telling us how to install (a bench install video) saying one day they would show us how to do it on the vehicle.

The first thing we did was to paint the front bash plate and the front plastic.

Then we took the bumper off. The bumper comes off with six bolts. Three on each side.

Then the TFFR instal. One set on each side. Plus of course the hardware.

Thee are a few other manufactures of frame horn supports. I found these to be the best and most substantial and probably the hardest to install.

From there web site.

The TFFR or Total Front Frame Reinforcement kit is a 100% bolt-on external and internal front frame horn reinforcement system.

  • Boxed side supports for each frame horn (total of 4)
  • Internal support bracing inner part of frame
  • Top of frame supports integrating whole system
  • 100% bolt-on - with no drilling or modification
Total reinforcement is achieved using fully boxed and welded reinforcement brackets to externally reinforce each side of the front frame horns. Internally, a crossbar system ties the two boxed frame horn brackets together, supporting your frame's internal box structure. Next, on top of each frame horn, a T bar bolts to both sides of the boxed brackets and reaches back 6" on top of the frame to an existing bolt, distributing all front frame horn loading across the most area possible without drilling or welding. This proven system is designed to work with the Metal-tech 4x4 Bronco Stronghold Winch mount but can be used with other bumper systems. Easy 100% bolt-on, no modifications to the frame.

Here's a picture of the frame horn. Three pieces on each horn. This pic has the top T piece on it which they said to start with. Also, you can see the bolt sticking though the frame horn which the brackets attach too.

This pic shows the top and one side bracket. Of course the other bracket is on the other side of the horn.

This is a good pic of the top bolt on the T bracket that you need to take out (it holds the intercooler) and put a washer on it and put back in and slide the bracket into it. In the MetalTech video they it is doable. It is doable as we did it but I can ensure you that it is very tough. You can barley get in there to turn the bolt. We didn't have a ratchet wrench which would have perhaps helped if you could get it over the bolt. It still would be hard.

it is amazing now it doesn't look that hard but it was perhaps four hours. There was a lot of fiddling to get the entire bracket on and we had to loosen one bracket getting the bumper back on as it had pulled away when we tightened it and the bolts were too short. We pulled it back flush with the bolts only and then put the tow hook on. We were happy it worked. We didn't have longer bolts. They are pretty big bolts and probably not something you have in your bolt supply.

Camera relocate was pretty straight forward and the winch mount and winch instal was straight forward. You have to take the front grill off to get at the camera and thankfully it came off easy. The second hardest part was probably cutting the plastic to fit the winch mount. It took a couple hours as we did it bit by bit to fit. It turned out great. Half way through it didn't seem like it was going to but it turned out real well. We gave it another coat of paint once cut. There is a lot of fiddling with all of it. It seems the manufactures expect you to have some basic mechanical skills as you have to use your common sense at times.

We were real happy with the install once done. I am leaving off my DV8 D rings as they are gloss black and they don't look good anyway with the winch mount. The tow hooks will be just fine by themselves especially with rope chafe protection.

Thanks for the write up. It's kinda nice to hear that others projects take twice as long as one might think it should just like my own. 😆

Yeah, the whole idea of a winch. Which winch, which mount (many considerations), camera relocate, frame reinforcement, fairleads, hooks and then the install.....ha...glad it's done. A lot to get your head around.

Isn’t it amazing how the manufacturers always gloss over how hard it really is to do all of these installations? And they all do it. They are afraid that people wouldn’t purchase their products if they knew how hard it really is. They may be right! Looks great Adam!

Thanks Tim. I think so. If there was a video showing the TFFR you may just pass and go with the not so good ones. It's really hard to believe someone came up with the brace and install. Someone is crazier than me. It's doable...ha. Yes it is. I really do think these are the best brackets so I am glad we did it. My buddy is an experienced mechanic and he thought it was tough and in his words not for the average guy. When there isn't an install video...we know why. ha

Nice that is the winch mount that I have been considering. Has there been an issue with the strength of the frame horns with a winch?

Nice that is the winch mount that I have been considering. Has there been an issue with the strength of the frame horns with a winch?

From what I have read there was a DV8 incident where there was an issue. So many are simply taking a proactive approach and putting on some kind of support. There are LOD brackets and ADD brackets and I believe one other. Tricky Motorsports made some brackets and he thought the LOD and ADD brackets were wanting. He was making small batches and was going to make more last summer until he found the MetalTech brackets and recommended them to his customers. Others have made their own brackets.Ford with their winch set up supplies their version of a frame horn bracket as well.

So seeing that Ford believes they need some extra support and the DV8 incident and the RC winch sits high it seemed prudent to reinforce.I know of a Raptor guy who put the RC high winch mount on with NO extra support and he has used it three times with no issue. I also know another Raptor guy who put the JCI mount on with no support and he hasn't had any issues either. The only issue I found about the RC mount is a guy bent the mount, but he installed it incorrectly. He did not put the large, thick black washers (really spacers) behind the mount. When installing you can see why he had an issue.

So nothing with the RC mount itself, it just seemed like a good idea and the MetalTech brackets seem the most robust. When I spoke with Rough Country I asked them about their mount bending and they said they have never heard of that. It seems like a one off with a poor installation. It was a pain installing the Metaltech brackets but it feels real good they are on. You can see in the pictures how much support they give.

I haven't used it yet but I like the mount. It sits nice and tight to the grill, you don't loose approach angle and it looks good. Not this big massive thing sticking out. Also, lots of air to the intercooler and Adaptive cruise control works with no relocate.

In your research did you determine if you would have bought the frame reinforcement if you did the Ford Performance Warn winch kit? I have that coming, and since it’s OEM I believe the reinforcement would be unnecessary but it makes me wonder if I should do it. Not great to hear how long that part of your install took, though!

Looks GREAT btw.

I'm glad I have a friend with a winch. You'll recall I let you order first at the shake and Burger place in Moab.

Seriously, super cool install.

I didn't look at the Ford winch kit that much. There were quite a few more steps for it to fit the Raptor and I had my eyes already on the RC mount. It seemed less work to put in the RC with the Raptor. Also, from what I saw the Ford horn frame mounts looked an easier install.

I don't really know if you really need the frame reinforcements or not. I can tell you once they are on it is a good feeling. At least I have done all I can and seeing the RC mount may put some additional pressure as it sits high that is a good thing.

Good luck with your install and post some pics.

I'm putting together parts for the same winch and bracket install - although I picked up the JCR camera relocation bracket, which on some other build threads, I see might interfear with the raised edge of the Warn fairlead (some of indicated they have installed the Farilead upside down, or went with a Factor 55 fairlead).

Can you share a pic of the view from your camera with this installed?

Just snapped it. Hope that helps. I really haven't noticed if the camera is different than before. It works great.IMG_4156.jpeg

IMG_4157.jpeg

I would't put it upside down. It won't be a nice look. All that money, time, effort and an upside down fairlead.

I was going to get a Factor 55 fairlead, then I spoke with Warn. The guy said the upgraded XD fairlead is good so I went with it. From what I read as well, it seems good quality. The reason I went with Mountains 2 Metal is because a guy I know on line, who I respect, used it with the same set up with no issues. It made it an easy decision even if it may be more expensive than other options. When installed I put the bracket on top of the logo bump out on the fairlead. It has room to raise or lower. I made it snug to the fairlead.

Nice writeup ano happy the install is done…

Question… do you have or use adaptive cruise, and if so did you have to relocate the radar sensor?

Thanks,
No adaptive cruise relocate. I know, for example, MetalTech you have to relocate the the adaptive cruise and they don't offer one. There may be other after markets relocates available. As well, lots of air for the intercooler which is a bonus with this mount. Also there are differences with installs between the Bronco and the Raptor even though the Raptor has the same capable bumper as some Bronco models.

Yes glad it is done!
