Hey Gang!

Nick here, back again to kick off another thread to show the work we've been doing on some more Brocno goodies! I know there's already some info out there on our other intercooler project, but I just wanted to consolidate all of our intercooler R&D to this thread!

First up we have our Performance Stock Location Intercooler for the folks who are planning for more power rather than the over-landing equipment, and we're diving into a performance stock location intercooler! We have a TON more info over in the latest post on the Engineering Blog:

Low Road – 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.3L/2.7L Performance Stock Location Intercooler R&D, Part 1 – Stock Review and Design Plans

When it comes to the Bronco specifically, there are a few aspects about the intercooler’s design that lock away power potential in both of these EcoBoost engines. First, Ford opted to use the same intercooler between the 2.3L single-turbo four-cylinder and the 2.7L twin-turbo six-cylinder for starters. It’s not uncommon for manufacturers to reuse components across their fleet to cut costs, but that comes with some compromises since a properly sized intercooler is vital for best performance. Oversizing the intercooler core can lead to increased turbo lag and slower response from the vehicle. Whereas an undersized core, especially when it’s cooling for two turbos, will soak with heat much quicker, returning high intake air temperatures and diminished performance. For the most part, this intercooler provides adequate cooling suitable for both engines during daily commuting duties but will quickly fall behind once more is demanded from the system.
...
Since we’re retaining the same mounting location for this intercooler, we have performance first on our mind, and performance starts in the core. So, to beef up the cooling power for both Broncos, we plan to bulk up the core’s thickness for an increased core volume and improved cooling power. Increasing the size of this intercooler might seem counterintuitive to an intercooler shared between two different engines. Still, the larger core volume is best for use with higher boost pressures resulting from tunes or bigger turbos, so this design is the ideal choice for those looking to squeeze more power from either EcoBoost...read more...

Next up is our High-Mount intercooler specifically for clearing some space for winches, lights, and other recovery gear!

HIGH ROAD – 2021+ FORD BRONCO 2.3L/2.7L PERFORMANCE INTERCOOLER R&D, PART 1 – STOCK REVIEW AND DESIGN PLANS

Ford’s latest iteration of the Bronco is designed for the high road. Ford sidelined its purpose-built off-road machine for quite some time but wanted to ensure that the return of such a legendary model would tackle the wilderness with ease and better than the stiff competition. Ford put mountains of thought and engineering into the modern Broncos to earn the true meaning of G.O.A.T. mode. Even after the extended time spent engineering the Bronco’s return, a few aspects could leave the Bronco in the dust, precisely when it comes to the intercooling system. Lucky for you, though, we’re already on the case to ensure that your 2.3L or 2.7L’s charged air temperatures are properly managed for true off-road domination.
....
The biggest mark against the Bronco’s intercooler is the mounting location. In theory, Ford’s placement is ideal for maximum performance since it’s located front and center on the vehicle with a dedicated port for airflow. However, given the rugged nature of this platform, winches and other off-roading necessities are also dancing through owners’ minds. The trouble is, most of these accessories would block much-needed airflow through the intercooler, so we’re going to move it...read more...

We'll have plenty more coming for both of these projects, so make sure to stay tuned, and don't hesitate to reach out with any questions! In the meantime - are you planning for a more on or off road dedicated build for your Bronco?

Hey Guys!

I just wanted to bump this thread with the latest info on our stock location performance intercooler! As always, make sure that you head over to our Engineering Blog for the full scoop!

LOW ROAD – 2021+ FORD BRONCO 2.3L/2.7L PERFORMANCE STOCK LOCATION INTERCOOLER R&D, PART 2 – PROTOTYPING

t’s no secret that the Bronco wasn’t resurrected to break land speed records. Just one look at this brick on towing off-roading tires makes it apparent that this machine was destined for more wild pathways. No matter where these Broncos feel at home, more power is still a necessity both on the trail and for the commute to work. Luckily, Ford stuffed different iterations of their platform that’s become synonymous with power potential – the EcoBoost. Whether it’s the 2.3L or the 2.7L, these engines have plenty of surplus performance locked away that can be accessed with the correct key. In this case, that key is intercooler shaped. Read More...

Hey Guys!

Happy Monday! I just wanted to bump this up since we just updated the blog with the first look at our performance intercooler production sample! Make sure you head to the link below to get the full look!

High Road – 2021+ Ford Bronco 2.3L/2.7L Performance Intercooler R&D, Part 3 – Production Sample

The right gear is essential to any adventure. This, in turn, makes any adventure the perfect excuse to upgrade your load-out, and who doesn’t like to have the latest and greatest equipment? The same could be said about the rig that promises adventure-ready status at all times. While Ford made sure to load these Broncos out with a diverse arsenal of off-roading bits, there were some aspects that we still needed that excuse to upgrade.

Just needing to move a component to clear space for more off-roading equipment is one best excuses to upgrade your systems, and we devised just the thing. This high-mounted intercooler is ideal for those looking to hide a winch or plotting to improve the Bronco’s approach angle. Now that it’s in the shop, we’re stoked to show off this intercooler’s final design and rehome it behind the upper grille. Continue Reading...

Hey Nick ,
This is great, its on the top of my list to install. We don’t need no heat soak going on out on the trails. Looking forward to more progress…Thanks for the update.
