Hey everyone

Anyone change the crappy 2pc lug nuts to Mcgards?

Stud thread is M12 x 1.5 and was looking particularly at the McGard bulge nuts 64015.

Not interested in wheel locks.

Those 2 piece lugs are awful. Had them on my focus ST (bought used about a year ago). Didn’t know about the ‘swollen lug issue’, but was burned by that when trying to do a tire rotation. What a PITA to get those lugs off once they swell and the soft covers start to spin freely. At first I thought I’d stripped it.

if you’re not familiar, the lugs are made in two pieces, the outer being a soft chrome cap that, over time, can swell, make it difficult to get a socket on, and ultimately can separate and make it very difficult to remove a wheel. It’s manageable in the garage, but could be a nightmare on the road or trail.

I’ll be swapping them out soon for sure. Attached is a pic from my ST showing the two pieces after I crudely separated them.

I’ll be switching to Gorilla lugs like I did on my F150. Not sure why Ford likes to use basically plastic lugs. The metal is extremely soft.

Thanks for supplying all that important info @Shoresy

I never had a problem with the 2pc nuts but have heard some nightmare stories. One poor guy spent 9 hours drilling them off including the studs.

An awful design by Ford but easy and relatively inexpensive fix by replacing them. Another note, aftermarket may not fit supplied wrenches so you may have to store a breaker bar/socket in the truck.

I used to have wheel locks but that all changed after the dealer buggered one of them. Another time I lost the key so now I run just lug nuts no locks.

McGards are excellent quality and never had a problem with quality/rust. They’re on my list of mods.

Great info, I honestly didn't know about 2 piece lug nuts. Seems like cheap insurance to change these out.
