Is the picatinny rail magnetic?

This is a question for anyone who has experienced the picatinny rail accessory in person, is it metallic and does anyone happen to know if it's magnetic? I realize this might sound like an odd question, but I have an idea of something I'd like to stick on there if it is.... otherwise I'll have to rig up an actual mount for my device.

SO... any insight here guys?

Aight - no insight, but a super guess. The purpose of a picatinny rail is to have a rail to securely fasten something using a screw or other clasping method. Making it magnetic would be like adding glue to tape. However, I bet you could easily rig a magnet to the picatinny rail.

If it is truly a picatinny rail, its designed to have a standard clamp to attach gear. The ones I have used were either tightened with a thumbscrew or a lever clamp. Also, all the rails I have used are 7061 aluminum (non-magnetic).

Ahhh, that's what I was worried about, it possibly being made out of non-magnetic metal. I might end up hiring someone to 3d print an actual mount for my application to properly attach to the rail. Was just hoping i could cheat with magnets!

I was just hoping it might happen to be made out of a magnetic metal, not that it was purposefully designed to be so.

The MIL-STD for the Picatinny Rail does not specify material or length. That is application specific. It's the feature geometry on the rail that matters in order to standardize the mounting method.

As @LagoCJ mentioned, 7000 series aluminum would be a good choice. Aluminum can also be anodized, not to mention in various colors.

I've been checking 4WP parts daily for the picatinny rail. Its as rare as the email from Ford with a vin and a build date. :ROFLMAO:
