Ford Tailgate Table- Rivet nuts are absolute trash

As promised, here is a thread on the Ford Tailgate table and the only issue I’ve had with it…the cheap, aluminum trash they used for rivet nuts. I noticed very shortly after taking delivery that one of the nuts had popped loose. I ordered my Bronco with the tailgate table and was told it would be put on at the factory (lie). It is put on by the dealership when it gets there. Save yourself $100 extra dollars and order it/ install it yourself. When you do install, do yourself another favor and get a rivet nut tool and quality rivnuts. Can’t stress this enough. Now, on to the pictures and descriptions…

It all started with this little bastard:

This was the top left nut that I first noticed had stripped. That small piece on the bolt is literally all of the thread that’s on these things. Seeing this, I decided to remove all four rivet nuts and start over with better ones. I used a screwdriver and a rubber mallet to tap the rivet nuts back into shape in order to pull them out.

Unfortunately, I still had a couple break into pieces when removing them (thank God for my mechanics magnet. If you don’t have one, you need one in your tool collection).

As stated earlier…absolute trash.

I then used a river nut tool and added quality rivet nuts. Unfortunately the holes the dealership drilled were too big for 1/4 inch rivet nuts. The hole was too big for the head diameter, so I had to use 5/16 rivet nuts instead. I ordered some 5/16 bolts on Amazon that are similar to what comes with the table and am waiting on those to arrive (should be tomorrow).

This rivet nuts are substantially stronger and have more thread on them. Definitely more confident in these since they are a solid piece and don’t separate like the trash that was on there (see below for what the original ones looked like)

All in all, I love the table itself. Have had zero issues with rattles and is a handy addition. Once I get the bolts in I will put it back together and provide some better pictures of the finished product.

Quick little update. Once I got the new rivet nuts in and went to install, I quickly found out that the ford tech who installed it did not have the holes lined up exactly where they should’ve been. This probably explains why some of the rivet nuts on there before were messed up, since I’m guessing they forced the bolts in and were at angles. Had to end up filing the holes a bit on the actual tailgate table to get everything lined up, but finally got it back on today and it is MUCH sturdier than before. That’s a little rain on the tailgate. 7C23BC14-AA8C-4414-BFB2-3760624ADE3E.jpeg

I had an issue with the one of the nuts not wanting to catch the bolt and seat itself. I had to take off the other trim piece and wedge a long screw driver behind it and press the threads to the screw to catch.

I also broke one of the cables and replaced both of them with a heavier gauge steel cable.

I wouldn't let the grease monkeys at the dealer change a tire on a car I was taking to the junk yard.

You think the riv-nuts suck, you should see the valves on the 2.7L JUST KIDDING.

I'm interested in how you like the table, as they seem very popular with the overlanding crowd. How do you intend to use it, for a stove, hold a cocktail, work bench, all of the above?

I love the table itself. You can tell they cut costs with the rivnuts, so I suggest anyone doing the install to replace them with something better. Rivet nut tool that included nuts was $36 on Amazon. Well worth it. I use it as a tool bench and tailgate table when at the beach. Don’t do a ton of overlanding myself but go to OBX a lot and drive on the beach, so it’ll be used for that primarily. It’s solid steel and have had no rattles with it.

Definitely a tool that is needed for any automotive/ metal work! Took a bit of grinding but I’m happy with the end result, all things being considered.

I’m with you there. Only reason I didn’t install it myself the first time is because my dealer told me it was put on at the factory so figured it’d be done right. He was wrong, since they were installing it the morning I came to pick it up. Oh well, fixed now at least and don’t think it’s moving anywhere now.

Hopefully those links above work. It’s from the Amazon app and wouldn’t let me copy a normal URL.

also, just know that I had to make the holes in the tailgate a bit bigger to fit the rivnuts in. The 1/4 inch rivnuts would’ve been too small for the size hole the dealership made for the origninal rivnuts, so I had to go one size up to the 5/16. This meant I also had to increase the size of the holes in the tailgate table a bit. Ended up using a file and drill bits to do everything, but was a little bit of a pain getting everything lined up correctly since I was correcting what the dealership screwed up. Best of luck with it and hit me up if you need any more help!

Got the table with my points and did the install myself and the last rivet nut stripped as I was attaching the last bolt to finish the install. PO'd is the polite way to describe my reaction. Went by the dealer and talked with the GM who is a friend. He was able to help me get part of it out but the other part fell inside the tailgate. So now he is working on getting me replacement part(s) and gonna help me get the remains out of the door. Not thrilled but I had the same design of this table on my 2018 wrangler and it worked great. Have to remind myself that patience is a virtue and it will all work out in time.

Use one of those extendable magnets that they sell at hardware stores. I was able to stick one in the lower hole and it stuck right to it. The OEM rivnuts are made metal that will stick to a magnet. I dropped pieces of mine on when I was taking them off and this worked perfectly for me.

Yeah they are trash. I bought these as a replacement. Even my dealer isn't using the parts provided by ford they are running to a local hardware store and buying stronger parts lol.

I purchase the Ford Tailgate Table long before my Bronco arrived. We've seemed to have lost the mounting hardware during our move... I was able to download the Installation Manual from the Tuffy website but it's not detailed on the hardware needed. I've looked at countless posts regarding installation/hardware and have come up with these as necesssary:

Short Jack Nuts (1/4"-20)

But that's where my luck ends. Anyone have information on the remaining mounting hardware needed? I would love to finally get this installed (despite all the bad reviews. lol).

Thank you in advance!

Drill bit because you need to drill into the gate, some 1/4 20 bolts and probably washers maybe/ lock washers. I'm going to see if I can spot a video with the list. Looks like it should of came with a bracket. Which I think you lost
