Heads up for those who ordered a configuration that wasn't available with roof racks—such as First Edition and Badlands 2.7L—the factory roof racks are now available from Ford's accessories site:

That is ridiculous that it costs $365 when added to your build and they install it, but you have to pay $825 and install yourself if you purchase after your build. I ordered a Badlands 2.7 4dr. And it was not an available option.

Yeah it's largely the cost of the packaging and shipping. This is obviously not something that can fit nicely in your average everyday Amazon box. So if you order it with your vehicle the packaging and shipping cost gets absorbed into the shipping cost of the vehicle itself. Don't get that luxury if you buy it separately.

Those who want to buy the hard top seperately are going to run into the same issue. Buy it from the factory and its a $695 upgrade over soft top. Buy it separately and it'll probably be $4000+.

It's cool that it's available, but I learned my lesson with the roof rack on my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek. I bought a Rhino rack and installed it myself, which was easy enough but it made a lots of wind noise and I never ended up using it. Looked cool, but it was essentially useless and it worsened my fuel economy to boot! My new rule is that I won't pile anything on top of my car that I cannot fit inside. So, I'm going to pack lightly and wisely.

$460.00 for packaging and shipping...that must be one hell of a box.

And for inventory, space on a shelf, markup for the parts distributors & dealers, etc. etc. All adds up.

Happens with any product. You can get a brand new phone for $400—only $15 of that cost is the battery itself. Yet if you buy a replacement battery after the fact it costs $50.
