Who has upgraded their exhaust and what did you upgrade to? How is the sound?

I went with Flowmaster Axle-Back Outlaw and it's too loud for me. I never thought I would say that.

Family, including the wife thinks is fine. I will say once at a cruising speed it is, but the first couple of gears it just seems too dang loud.

What do you have and how is the sound? I'll be selling this and upgrading to something new and less noise.

I haven't pulled the trigger but if I do, will go with the Borla offering. Check them out at

https://www.borla.com/products/exhaust-systems/results/ (you will have to load year/make/model/config/engine to filter the noise)

Borla offers Axle Back in 3 sound profiles: Touring, S-Type, and ATAK--they have a great recorded sound for each to help you decide which is best for your desired growl.

They also offer Cat Back in Touring and S-Type

I have used them a few times over the years and have been very satisfied with build, performance, and longevity.

I recently installed the Magnaflow cat-back overland series- it's got 4 configurations for loudness - I absolutely love it

I second the Magnaflow Overland series that @Calgecko mentioned

Note that I'm not a huge fan of noisy loud exhausts... I have to drive this thing for hundreds of miles at a time... so it has to be a "livable" volume level.

Magnaflow Overland for me also. I tried all configurations and left it on the supposedly loudest. Less complex.
Quite quiet at lower RPM’s with a very tolerable upper end sound.

I did use longer hangers on the muffler as their geometry wasn’t as they claimed. Tech support was not going to help.

I have a 2dr and that allowed me to use the mid pipe that comes for the 4dr to extend tail pipe from underneath to a prefect look and location. I don’t like exhaust exit underneath in front of bumper.

Nicely built full cat back in a 3” diameter.

Interesting - I had no issues with the hanger locations on the kit for mine (4 dr). I also have mine on the loudest configuration, I've played with the quietest (for a 1500 mile road trip, so it wouldn't drive my wife crazy) and the 2nd loudest - the differences are very subtle. I'm very happy with it - pretty quiet at idle and cruise, but opens up a bit when you get on the throttle, but not obnoxious

Glad yours worked out. Mine came with a un-adjustable tailpipe. Exhaust exit was pointed directly at bumper. I couldn’t rotate muffler enough to clear it until I lowered it a bit with longer hangers. Now I love the look. I have read complaints from a few other owners that had the exact same issue.

Maybe mine was a earlier production unit. Hopefully Magnaflow has corrected their issues.

I'm going with Borla S-Type. Love the the way it is tucked up under bumper and tips are angled down. I'm geussing sound will be good.

I just installed the Borla s-type a couple weeks ago. I've had Borla on vehicles in the past which is why I went with them again (for the quality and sound) and I couldn't be happier, although the price is a little steep. The sounds clips from Borla don't do them justice, I don't think.

Installation
Installation was pretty easy and straight forward, anyone competent working on their vehicle should be able to do the job by themself. I used the help of a car jack on one end to hold the original exhaust in place while I removed it from the connection above the axle. Also needed a pry bar and a little WD40 to help remove it from the pipe. Putting the Borla on was easy enough, but it was a little bit of pain to get the alignment of the tips equal on either side. Really enjoy the tucked look of the tips.

Sound
Whoa! It does not disappoint in the slightest. Cold startup is definitely the best and has a nice deep growl. It is a little loud (not a bad thing) at startup but once the engine goes through its normal routine and the RPM's come down to normal idle it's not too loud at all. Has a nice even, deep tone.
Cruising around it's not much louder than stock, but will wake up once you get on the throttle. At highways speeds you can still hear it, but it's not loud enough to take over the wind noise with the soft top.

The Borla, Ford Performance tune, and aFe intake really wake up the engine.

I was looking at the Borla Cat Back a few weeks ago. They sound nice. I don't care how loud it is. I have a stage one kit on my bike with shark fin pipes. It sets off car alarms as I'm riding through parking lots.

Just finished my Borla s-type and a whipple intercooler. Wondering if the aFe hot and cold charge kit will help increase performance…..

After much research, I went with the Flowmaster Fx cat back. I love the sound, and have had many people approach me and state 'they love the sound of my truck'. Some may consider it a bit loud, but I love the burbling, pops and rumble.
It tucks up nice and tight, and looks great.

I went with the Ford Performance (Borla) Axel Back with black chrome tips. Love the look and the sound. Honestly, it has a nice rumble but it's not offensive by any means. Ford accessories often offers a 20% promo code (current is FESTIVE20), which works on this as well.

Just curious what other people have done with their stock exhaust? Is it worth trying to resell or do they typically just go to the recycle bin?

Keep it, you may need it when your aftermarket exhaust wears out.

Finished installing the aFe hot and cold charge kit. Very tight fit. I had to modify the aluminum IC connectors for the Whipple IC, just a little work with my Dremel. Next up may be an intake filter kit……

Nice. In that case, offer it up for sale as I am sure that someone from the Bronco community will want to get their hands on it.
