I gathered all the parts to add a 7-pin tow package to my Bronco. I'll keep this thread updated as I make progress.

The only thing a 7-pin does over 4-pin is provide for trailer brake control, and charge the battery on the trailer. Thus you will still need to add that to your "kit".

The brake control is provided by the product in the top left corner. (Echo Brake Controller). Going to have to tap into a 12v to get charging, but the wires for that are above.

Oh, OK, didn't realize that until I made the screenshot bigger. For me, I'm getting the "genuine" kit, part VM2DZ-2C006-A. The kit is not a plug-play, rather has to be hard-wired. Suggestion, if you can get a copy of the install procedure, would save you time in wiring.

VM2DZ-2C006-A I bought from Levittown Ford, had best price at $280, which was even cheap than my Ford employee price. The controller is the only one approved by Ford to be compatible with Forward Collision Warning, and Auto Braking and has two modes of proportional or user-controlled.

So, following some threads from Bronco6g, it looks like some folks are using the two 12v in the rear driver panel for aux. It seems to be the 30A one. Those seem to be always hot… so does any one know if the 12v on the 7-pin for the Bronco is always hot?

For clarity, the two 12v I’m referring to are in C4397A.

@Mikey Smith it’s the black 12v I’m curious about. Is that always hot?

The pin is supposed to be for charging the back-up battery for the trailer brakes. If wired properly, it should only be hot, and powered by the alternator output. It would only take a minute to confirm with a 12-volt test light...

Hey Nic, following here from Smyrna as I'm waiting on my Badlands (had to give up the tow package to get it sooner) from Wade Ford and plan to add the tow hitch and possibly a 4 pin. Curious which hitch you went with and where you got it.

Unfortunately, I can't answer your question about the wiring, but if I come across anything I'll be sure to post here.

I got almost everything from etrailer. The hitch does not have a spot for the flat or 7-pin, so that will have to be mounted separate.

Traditionally the 12v on a 7 pin is always hot, most modern vehicles however have it on a relay so it’s only hot when a trailer is detected. Don’t have my bronco yet so can’t confirm how it’s wired.

I noticed that too. I was looking at one that was around $110 and looked just like yours, but I noticed it didn't have a slot for the 4 pin I was hoping to eventually add. Not sure I want to buy the Ford version for ~$200 more just for that. I'll be interested to see how you mount it. I also considered just looping a zip tie through one of the holes on the hitch you have to roughly hold the wiring harness. Wouldn't be as pretty, but may be able to tuck it away back there since it's only a 4 pin.

They make, or you can make, a 7-pin to 4-pin adaptor harness. I made one up, as well as a 4-pin to 7- pin wire harness.
