I am an avid mountain biker that currently uses a hitch type bike rack. Since the Bronco has a spare tore and swing gate, I was thinking of a roof top bike rack but wasn’t sure how feasible that would be with the height of the vehicle. Does anyone have any experience with that type of rack on a vehicle that tall?

There are spare mount bike racks available. Would solve the tailgate/spare problem and you wouldnt have to worry about a roof mount.

You will have not problem placing your bikes on top of your Bronco. Thule, Yakima and many others all make roof top bike racks. The only issue with a roof top bike rack is that you can forget that they are up there (out of sight, out of mind) and the consequences can be bad. Ask me how I know this...

I have a Thule hitch mount bike rack that I am hoping I can still use on the Bronco with a hitch extender. As far as still opening the rear door goes, I am less concerned about that.

So the height of the roof + rack + bike rack wouldn’t be to tall?

You'll definitely be climbing on the tire to get it up there based on SAS or nono-SAS. I had an old Blazer with a Yakima for my Mtn Bike and had to have running boards installed to make it easier, and that was just the old S-10 blazer/JImmy LOL

That's what I figured. Thanks.

I installed a spare tire mount that held two bikes on my 2018 Jeep Wrangler. It had the swing gate and worked perfectly.

Was it the kind where the bikes hang or sit in a “cradle”

1624645356238.pngThis is the one I purchased. It is a Yakima spare tire bike rack. I had 33" Nitto Ridge Grapplers. The bikes were very secure and their security straps were easy to use and worked well. You want to wait until you have your final spare you want to carry and then measure the distance through the center of the spare to ensure you get a long enough rod that passes through and is secured by the red knob in the photo. When I purchased it, they provided a security cable with lock. The best part was I could open the tailgate with the bikes attached. (I took these photos from an advertisement.)1624645273325.png1624645020483.png

I guess I'm not exactly sure how this works but apparently there is just the center rod. How will this work with the Bronco with the center rod being a location for the back up camera?
Maybe I'm missing something here.

This won't work on a Bronco at all as the rear camer a is mounted in the center of the hub, given you want to sue the rear camera

I’ll be going tow hitch bike rack regardless of the swing door. I’ll need the roof space for kayaks.

I use the tow hitch mounted rack.
To utilize the tailgate had to install 6.25” tow hitch drop that at the same time time extended the hitch receiver by 7”

Do not recommend the “hanger” type bike carrier for carbon fiber frames or custom painted bikes.
