AMP Research vs RockSlider retractable running boards

Don’t Let the Hard Days Win!

Has anyone installed the AMP Research steps on their Bronco? If so, which model (there are three)…

Looking at those and the RockSlider, but prefer the “not so boxy” look of the AMP standard vs the RockSlider…

Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

The plus about AMP is they use the OBDII port that makes the install very simple. Reads direct from the vehicles computer. They do not double as rock rails.

Don’t need rock rails, but stock running boards are too high to be of much use… think the amp’s would give a better step height while covering the spot weld strip along the bottom of the rig (which is also a goal)

I have the AMP steps! I agree that the stock steps were pointless for stepping on. They are the basic power step running board. I live in Alaska and they are great cause they drop down with a snow free surface to step on.

Thanks for posting the pictures! I want a set of retractable steps. My step-brother had a set on his F150 Platnum and he loves them. I don't know which brand he has. What's the cost on these may I ask?

Rock rails/sliders and steps have different functions. When rock crawling, protection is needed from rocks coming up and hitting the bottom of the door area and even the door itself. Getting something that sticks out a few inch’s offers a lot of protection from body/door damage, even door dings. Steps are a nice connivence for getting in and out of the bronco. They wont offer much protection. So depending on how you plan on using your Bronco will determine what’s best for you.

I'm like you. I run trails rated from 1-4. The ability to help us old folks get in and out is a big plus. I also like how they tuck under the truck when not in use.

Yeah, i need a little lower step than stock…. As it is, i swing my leg into the truck and don’t even use the running board…

The AMP has a lot of features I’m looking for…. Mostly, tucking out of the way and operating from the OBD so I don’t have to mess with door switches…. I wonder how it manages if the doors are removed…

When I received my window sticker the other day I made a run to the dealership and they had 7 Broncos on the lot. 3 had RSE steps and one had the Amp Research. For my use the RSE wins for durability plus even when retracted there is a nice flat area to use as a step which will be great for reaching the rooftop. I had been looking at the Magnum post machined steps as well but was sold on the RSE after seeing them . If you have a 4 door you may want to be careful of two people stepping up on the Amp boards at the same time as there are a few videos of them breaking away from overloading the small rail .

I have the RSE steps and love them. I wanted the protection of a rock rail so this was a great alternative for me. It really unbelievable how beefy they are when installed.

The flat area that can be used as a step is also nice for helping keep stones and mud off the side of Bronco, but on the other hand, it makes it a little tougher to get out of your Bronco without wiping the back of your leg against that muddy edge. You can do it but you have to be careful.

I'd have to go back and look at my paperwork but I believe around $1,800. I had them installed as well. My husband could have installed them but he didn't have time as it was during our busy season.

BTW that price did not include the installation but if I remember correctly it was a 4-5 hour job.

Interesting comment. Have you had any issues with retracting the step when you have mud or other debris on it?

I haven't had any issues due to mud. Since they are normally closed when you are moving, the mud really does not get on the retractable step. Of course you will get some mud on them when you step on them with muddy shoes, but that has not caused any issues. I make sure to have the step down when I spray the Bronco off and it rinses any mud that is inside.
A concern I did have was in the snow. If it would throw ice on the step while going down the road so it would prevent the step from coming down. On a normal winter, I would know if that was an issue or not but we had a very mild winter so I didn't have to worry about it.
The mud I was talking about in my initial post was mud that was on the outside edge. When you step down it is easy to brush the back of your leg up against it.

The wife and I love the RSE power boards. I'm not sure you can find a lower step when it is down, plus the flat area on top makes a great step to reach the roof and windshield for cleaning.
