This is a good idea, I can see one of my dogs scratching the arm rest up. My Boober gets exited and a 140lbs Dane can mess some stuff up.

How thick is the padding?
It slips on and is the thickness of like a phone cover. It's more about protection from the elements, scratches, etc than padding. They have other options that lend more to padding and less about protection. Just depends on your needs for one.
