Parts of what look like metal band/ring in oil pan

I have a 88 Bronco, it is running and didn't show any sort of power issues but had developed serious oil leak.

Took it in, my mechanic who I trust implicitly opened it up, and found parts of what look like a metal band or ring in the bottom of the oil pan as can be seen in the attached photo.

Of course eventually he'll find it, but I'm wondering if anyone knows exactly what this is?

My gut tells me it’s valve train related…
Maybe a lifter or rocker related part???
Or maybe a valve seal keeper???

That’s my ballpark “shot in the dark” guess.
If you find out please let us know what it is.…
