any drivers out there who have swapped the 3-speed standard for an AOD? i tried going thru as much of YT and sites like wildhorses 4x4 and I still have questions. I am ordering the AOD, torque converter, a shift lever package, a TV cable, a kick-down device, an adapter for the Dana 20, and a new cross member. I have a local guy building me two new driveshafts.

My questions I couldn't see answered in all of my research are these:

1. how do i determine if the flywheel needs to be changed? if yes, then does the starter need to be changed? and how do u count the teeth?
2. most of the AOD's i'm seeing for sale are 2WD. Can i simply remove the tailstock from the 2WD AOD, bolt on the Dana 20 converter and proceed to install? or is something else required.
3. i see some Bronco's have the new AOD shifter on the drivers side of the existing transfer case shifter? but there is more room on the passenger side for a new shifter? how does that all come together?

if anyome doesn't mid typin in a few lines here to set me straight i'd be grateful. thank you - joe

thank you Bax for the add'l info. It's pretty much locked in stone I'm ordering a 4R70W. would be nice to try to get the Explorer engine and tranny and the EFI but this is for my daughter and she wants to be in and driving by end of Summer. I'm going to be putting up a lot of pics over the next 8 weeks because we're ramping up next week on her Bronco.

Don't buy from Monster Transmission. I did. Installed and it didn't work. Since it took me more than 90 days to get it installed, I would have had to pay shipping both directions. They also told me I would have to pay for any parts needed. I had to pay a local transmission guy to rebuild it.

ok got an update here. ordered a 2000 4R70W today after speaking on the phone with the builder for a few calls to plan it all out. he had me ship him the conversion kit from bronco graveyard. he's going to put that together and ship me the tranny and a torque converter. his charge was $2,800 and the kit shipped was $700. i still have a lot of things to get and do to be driving. i wasn't really paying attention to the cost because the guy builds to a good spec, does some testing and says he warranty's his product. plus i sold my '71 sport and the profit there is finding the '68 build free and clear. will put up pics when i get the pallet and will also list the other parts i'm getting. thx to all in here for offering lists and advice. more to come.

update - i got the dana 20 out first today. it's going to a local transmission shop for a re-build. yes i dropped the small cylindrical bearings in the case. couldn't really avoid it. then i jacked up the adapter and removed the crosss member. no problems there. lastly, i supported the rear of the 289 with a small floor jack and having already taken the bell housing bolts out, wiggled the 3-speed out of place. didn't take long after that to remove the 3-speed from the little harbor freight tranny jack onto some cardboard - thank you children for amazon orders EVERY day - and yanked the cardboard and tranny out from under the truck. cluth mechanism came out, then the flex plate. pilot bearing will be next week. took about 5 hours but nothing got damaged so i'll take it. 4r70w arrives late next week.

Hi one thing you need to check in diferent balance in the flywheel , just keep your original flywheel and match to the new flywheel, the old motor has diferent balance of the new transmition aod is a great simple transmition no electronic, millions of car in service today good luck bronc70
