Hey BN
Thoughts on this. Is this needed?
Does the spare tire cause a strain to the tailgate ?

If you are running bigger heavier tires then yes. When you step up in size, you step up in weight. Same is true for heavier tires and wheels. Plus if you are doing a ton of heavy duty off road stuff, you are multiplying the stress load on the hinges. Most people though will not have an issue.
Me personally- Im not a fan of this look. I do not intend to step up from 35s. If I did, I would probably look at a bumper with a mounted swing out tire carrier, but that me. Lots of folks run set-up like these. It does give you a good spot to mount a jerry can though.

My thought is that it is only needed if you are planning for a heavier, larger spare or plan to store additional gear on the rear mounted spare like RotoPax or Traction Boards

Well if you get larger tires than yes. Otherwise no.

I have the bigger Sasquatchs tire. Am I ok with leaving it alone ?

With any of the wheels from the factory you are fine.
